five

we shouldn't have trespassed,
i said
after we laid on the grass in an unfamiliar park
way too many miles away from our houses.

it was fun,
you said
after you caressed the bruise on my cheek
caused by a police officer pushing me to the ground.

obviously,
i said
after thinking back to how we made our way through an empty mall, through neighborhoods and by a beach
until we were able to escape the hands of men with guns.

i love you,
i said a while later
after remembering the way you saved me from the officer and grabbed my hands while we ran
so we wouldn't lose our warmth during the cold four am breeze.

we smiled.
