A world in which the gods can live alongside humans and bless special entities to become gods. After a ceremony, one young man gets chosen to be the god of heartthrob and bittersweet  feelings. He lives with his best friend from childhood, they do everything together because the chosen one does not have parents.

He is not allowed to tell anyone about his godhood because it could cause immense trouble, but he tells his friend that the gods have chosen him to search for coming gods. The friend promises to never tell a soul, but is now aware of the fact that the chosen one will leave one day, the friend has had a crush on the chosen one for as long as he can remember. They choose to stay together for as long as possible.

Slowly the chosen one gets aware of feelings around him and the fact that he is constantly surrounded by faint humming sadness. They live by the seaside and like to go to the beach, one day the chosen one feels called to the sea, a cinematic beauty shot encores and one of the kids in town starts paying attention to him. the chosen one doesn't know how to work around it. When his powers get stronger they meet the other boy by accident and he realizes that the chosen one must be a coming god.

He shares his suspicion with his father, who is unbeknownst to all, a developed god who has stepped down into the mortal realm for a while. He gets interested in the chosen one and starts pursuing him. He ropes him in with knowledge and kinship. the chosen one feels understood and encouraged by the god and falls for him.

The friend watches sadly from the sidelines and starts drowning his problems in alcohol. One night then the chosen one gets home, he confesses to him in a haze, the chosen one finally understands what the constant sadness was. Because he has the mindset of a god already, he chooses to spend one night with his childhood friend and to vanish in the morning. The bliss and regret in his friends feelings plus the loss of his virginity turn him into a proper god.

He feels that it is the most he can do for his friend and leaves early the next morning. The developed god takes him in and together they go to the heavens. the friend is heartbroken and contemplates suicide but feels like he has been given a precius gift by his now turned god friend.He chooses to devote himself to praying to his love and to opefully channel power and his feelings to him. One day he meets a noble woman who is searching for a contract marriage to avoid somebody else, she understand that he will not love her but they become good friends and live together for the rest of their life, eventually falling in love and dying together.

The friend thinks about the god in his last moments but realizes that he has already let go and he dies without regret.

pathos (dìoghras and the related pathetic are often used ironically, of something that in principle should arouse pity, but in fact is treated with wry humour. Not so common in speech is bathos, which often signifies a sudden transition from genuine pathos to ludicrous levity

Gallows Humor isn't a perfect fit, but in general the Doom & Gloom of the style of humor could be considered to be fairly synonymous with sadness, and of course humor is basically a perfect fit for the funny half of the equation.
