The hot sun beams down on me, but there's no ignoring the chilly breeze blowing around this morning. I zip my jacket farther up and stick my hands in my pockets, holding my phone securely.

The people around me buzz past me in a hurry, some trying to make sales and some trying to get to work on time. Soon I may be one of those people.

Mum and Dad may pay for most of my things, but a job will make me feel more independent and will consume more time. Not having a job has its perks but I feel that I'm ready to take on some responsibility. Plus, I can't hang out with Luke all the time, I need something else to do. I also want to save up for an iPhone 6.

I glance around the streets as I go, searching for a 'help wanted' sign anywhere. I know people don't generally do that anymore, but it's worth a shot.

After a long search, I come across a small place between a flower shop and a clothing store named Books 'N Things. The smallest piece of paper is taped to the door with the message 'hiring.'

I push open the door and a little bell rings, catching the attention of an older woman between two bookshelves. She smiles at me and approaches me, a small stack of books in her arms.

"What can I do for ya?" She asks politely, leading me further into the store.

"I'm actually looking for a job...are there any openings left?"

"Yes, yes my dear. My son's girlfriend quit when they broke up, and we've been short-handed lately. What's your name?" She stops when we reach the counter sets the books down gently.

"Meredith Bear." I state.

"Consider yourself hired, Meredith Bear. You start Monday morning at nine."

"I don't need to fill out an application or anything?" I question, confused as to why I already have the job.

"Nope. But here, write your first name on this slip of paper and then slide it into this name tag..." The woman trails off and hands me a pen and a small piece of paper, along with an empty name tag. I scribble my name down and slide it through the slit.

"I assume you're a medium in shirts, so I'll go grab you one."

I'm amazed yet slightly creeped out at how she knew my shirt size. Maybe she looked at the size of my boobs. Or maybe I'm just the only one on the planet who can't guess a person's clothing sizes.

The woman, whose name I still don't know, comes back with a baby blue shirt with the store's name across the upper back and a cute floral print pocket in the front. I take the shirt and the pin in my hand and tuck it into my jacket since I don't have my purse.

"My son will get you your official schedule when you come in on Monday. His name is Adam."

"Alright, see you Monday." I wave goodbye and leave the book store, nearly bumping into a group of twelve year olds as they giggle over hot celebrities. One of them raises her middle finger at me. I ignore her ignorance and move on, heading back towards the apartment complex.

I decide to stop at my mailbox before heading inside, so I fish for my keys and look over the mailboxes until I find mine.

A few bills, some coupons, and some sale flyers. I toss everything but the bills in the garbage bin in the lobby and step into the elevator. The doors begin to close when a middle-aged man with slightly dirty clothing slides between the doors. They close behind him and he sighs in relief.

"What floor?" He asks, pressing the fourth floor, which I assume is where he lives.

"Two." I reply quickly. He presses the two but instead of moving his hand away, he presses the rest of the buttons.

My heart skips a beat as he moves closer, pushing me against the wall. The handle digs into my spine but I ignore the pain and focus on the situation. He's going to try something.

"You're very pretty." He compliments, tucking a large strand of my hair behind my ear. I turn my head away in disgust, smelling alcohol on his breath. He must have been at a bar all night.

"My wife left me for a rich guy. She was beautiful, and I miss her, but she isn't as beautiful as you." He whispers in my ear.

His hand cups my breast and squeezes, making me whimper in discomfort. This man has to be at least fifteen years older than me.

"Your tits are bigger than Judy's as well."

I shove him off of me and press the 2 button at least a hundred times. He grabs my wrists and turns me around, bringing me uncomfortably close to him.

I continue to stay silent, unable to find the words to say. The doors open and I try and run from him but he presses a button behind me and the doors close. I feel the elevator jerk, letting me know it's moving again. He wraps his hairy arms around my body and presses his lips against mine, his tongue slipping between my lips. I cry out and shove him off me. The doors open again and I run out of the elevator, nearly running into Luke. He shouts my name but I'm already yanking my door open. I slam it shut and lock it behind me, relieved to be alone.

Someone knocks on my door and for a moment I move to open it, used to it being Luke, but I go against what I think when I realize it isn't his usual pattern of knocks and walk into my bedroom. I close and lock that door as well.

I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket so I take it out and type in my passcode. It's a text from Luke.

Don't open your door, it's not me
