The Shounen editing department was decorated with red, white, and pink ribbons. Hearts of all shapes and sizes decorates the walls and desks. Packages of chocolates and big fluffy teddy bears blocked the aisle ways. Rose petals covered every available surface. Cards with neatly handwritten names of lovers or crushes were laying on desks or haphazardly knocked to the floor. It's the typical Valentine's Day chaos employees have come to love or hate depending on the condition of their own love lives. There is one noticeable difference.
Despite the cheery decor and indications of having special plans for later tonight, the atmosphere in the room is tense and rather quiet. The main sounds are the groans of frustration and dejected sighs as people mutter about never being able to finish in time. The editors have fallen into the perilous trap of dedicating all their time to planning out Valentine's Day instead of getting their work accomplished. Now almost everyone is rushing to get things done in the futile hopes of not ruining Valentine's Day for their lovers.
One person has managed to escape the trap and is in the opposite situation of all others in the department. And that person is the editor of chief Kirishima who is currently seated at the front of the department with a beaming smile and full of energy. He has made no effort to hide his excitement and eagerness to leave the office for the day. Kirishima spent the whole week before Valentine's Day working late.
It was challenging having to tell Yokozawa and Hiyori he would not be able to join them, but both of them are mature and understanding. Kirishima appreciates this side of their personalities even though sometimes he wished they would be more selfish or tell him that it made them upset. Yet, it would go against their caring nature to do or say something that would be a hinderance to him. One day, Hiyori and Yokozawa would get passed being so considerate of him and speak up about how a situation actually made them feel. Kirishima looked forward to when the day would come and he silently promised to fully support them when it did.
Smiling wider at this thought, Kirishima chuckled as he imagined them cutely blushing and panicking at their first attempt at voicing their displeasure at his staying at work hoping they didn't make him angry. He snapped out of his thoughts as he felt many pairs of eyes lock on him. He could practically hear the jealously of his coworkers even if they didn't actually say it. The bitter expressions were evidence enough of how they felt. Of course, they weren't mad at Kirishima they were irritated at themselves for being far behind.
"At least someone here is in a good mood. It could give us the boost we need to power through the day and get to the reward of spending the holiday with the ones we love," Katou announces earning a loud sound of agreement from all around the room.
"Actually, I'm done," Kirishima replies giving his coworkers an apologetic smile.
"Huh?" The unanimous response echos around the room.
"I'm heading out for the day," Kirishima states having packed up all his belongings.
"Hold on...it's one o'clock! How did you finish so early?" Akita asks, disbelief in his tone and facial expression.
"Determination and the desire to have some fun tonight," Kirishima answers struggling against the urge to ignore them and walk out the door. He didn't work so hard to be wasting time on playing a round of twenty questions with his coworkers.
Kirishima watched his coworkers process those words. Some people's faces turned red while others shook their heads presumably to dismiss whatever idea came to mind at hearing his words. It probably shouldn't be as entertaining and enjoyable watching his coworkers scramble to discuss their ideas or hearing the enthusiastic squeals in reaction to his word as it was, but Kirishima acknowledged this as a part of his twisted personality.
"I would tell you more about what my plans for the night were, but it seems that your imaginations might be more thrilling than reality," Kirishima explains lips curving into a mischievous smile and as he expected many faces flushed a bright pink color. Other people attempted to hide their face behind their computer screens. "Good luck with getting your work done."
"What if something comes up and we need your help?" Amie asks even though she already anticipated what answer she would get.
"You can call me. However, I highly recommend you are absolutely positive that whatever you are doing requires my attention before contacting me," Kirishima replies putting emphasis on some of his words.
A silence falls over the crowd as they stare at Kirishima's natural cheery facade. All the workers had gotten the clear message that Kirishima would be pissed if he gets interrupted over something easily solved or fixed. Once again, it crossed the Shounen department members mind of how Kirishima could in reality be a terrifying person. However, no one could complain because even if Kirishima frightened them at times like this, he was still a hell of a lot better then the other department chiefs who appeared to be yelling or lecturing someone nonstop during the whole work week.
"Have a good day Kirishima-san," Katou responds appearing unfazed by his superiors ominous words.
Pasting on his breezy smile, Kirishima says goodbye and heads out of the door. He smirks as he heads to his apartment with all thoughts of work or his coworkers vanishing and the Valentine's day plans take over.
