I learned life has a way of throwing curveballs at you. If you don't duck, you'll get hit. Life threw a curveball at Gabe. His leg will be okay, but I'm not so sure about his mind. My brother is a goober.
When Gabe contacted the restaurant, the owner decided he no longer had a job. Gabe works for a lovely owner who needs a sharp object shoved up his, well, you get the point.
How the hell do you fire someone for an accident during a freakish snowstorm? Why in the hell was Bradley at the accident scene? Two questions without answers.
The school canceled classes for two days until the DTE restored the power. Do they have any idea how cold it is?
"Thank God for fireplaces. My nipple could cut glass with how hard they are," Deacon mentioned.
"No one cares about your nipples," Nate remarked.
"I care."
"You're the only one."
Nate and Deacon argued about Deacon's nipples. Why? One day, I may have them as brothers-in-law.
Elias added wood to the fire. "How about you both shut the hell up?"
Nate and Deacon quit arguing.
"I can't believe I got stuck with you dumbasses," Elias grumbled.
"Someone needs loving because you're moody," Deacon countered.
Elias shot Deacon a glare. Do you understand what I mean? I pray for their future children.
Someone pounded on the front door, and I answered it. Gia barged in, almost knocking me over.
"Welcome to my humble abode. Do you want to come in?" I asked with an annoyed look.
"Yes, because it's freaking cold outside!" Gia exclaimed.
"Well, have your man warm you up." I pointed at Deacon.
"Good idea." Gia kicked off her boots and tossed her coat on a chair. She made a beeline to Deacon.
"Thanks for treating my home like yours," I grumbled.
I went over to the couch and sat down next to Elias, covering up with a blanket.
"When is the hospital releasing Gabe?" Nate asked.
"In a few days. Dad said he's a model patient," I answered.
Everyone looked at me.
"Gabe's bitching about everything," I added.
"Ah," they said.
Yep, my parents let me with the Harper boys. God, help me.
*********
GabeI sat in bed, eating hospital food. I'm not sure if it's real food. Does jello count? Why must they serve green jello?
"Heads up," dad said, tossing me a brown sack.
I caught it and opened it. "You da man, dad."
"I'm da man," dad agreed, grinning.
"Good lord," mom added.
I pulled out a burger and dove in. I had fries too-hot damn. A burger and fries beat hospital food any day. I finished my food and crumpled the bag, setting it on the table next to the bed.
"I'm glad to be alive, but not glad that I don't have a job," I sighed.
"When I return to the office, I'm filling paperwork for wrongful termination. Your boss had no right to fire you," dad informed me.
