A heavy yawn escaped my throat as I walked towards the double doors at the end of the hall, the heels of my boots clicking against the linoleum tiles. A soft jingle followed the clicks as my college ID swung lazily at my chest. My eyes felt heavy and I had to fight to keep myself awake.
Sucks that I didn't have a dorm on campus. Of course that had been my own choice.I had a small apartment with a roommate who was hardly home just a road down from the college. As to why I was at the school so late? It wasn't that I took night classes, I could never make it through the night if so. No, rather it was a study group that I attended once a week. They typically never ran this late but our end of course exam was the next day and my peers and I were doing our best to cram as much as we could before it came.
One of the students had offered me a ride home, a puppy dog eyed man who was about 22 (a year younger than me), but I had politely declined. After all I was a short distance away and I didn't want to inconvenience anyone. It's always been in my nature to refuse help. Even when I need it. I'm always scared to say no or yes to people because I don't want them going out of their way to help me. It's a flaw my father always said would get me in trouble one day, and he was probably right.
Pushing the doors open, I tilted my face to the cold air that came rushing through. It was a nice, cool night. Perfect for a late walk. I checked my watch: 11:23 it read. It's best if I walk quickly. At home my shower and bed were calling for me, pleading for me to come so I could embrace them. Being a law major it was the only thing that felt welcoming to me. I was in my third year of college at a university out of state. It was a big move and took a lot of adjusting but it was an amazing opportunity I just couldn't pass up. Besides, Florida was nowhere near as bad as I had heard and feared it was.
So here I was, walking the streets of a rural college town. As I passed by house after house on my way to the apartment complex I noticed most of the lights off. This was far from unusual, after all most students didn't sleep until very late at night. We had way too much to do. Aside from the lights on in the houses, traffic was very light. Here and there a car would drive by but for the most part the streets were vacant.
The temperature had started to drop as I neared the apartment complex. It was mid fall and every night had begun getting colder and colder. There was no chance of snow, at least not this early in the year and especially not in florida. Yet I still found myself wrapped in a thick jacket. No matter what I tried, the cool air cupped my face and body, sending chills down my spine.
That was when it hit me. A sense of overwhelming dread. It made my stomach churn and my pulse race. Something was wrong, I could feel it. It felt like I was being watched. I stopped and looked around, e/c eyes squinting to see things in the dark haze of street lights. Nothing. It must just be my imagination. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. 'okay relax y/n. You're just tired, you need sleep' I thought to myself, trying to find comfort in the thought. Everything was okay. At least...that's what I thought.
A strong hand clasped itself firmly over my mouth. It was gloved, with the feel of leather, and it's twin grabbed my arm. A muffled scream barely had a chance to rip itself from my throat. Within a second the breath exits my lungs as my back collides with brick. My eyes looked up, wide with fear, to the man who held me trapped. I was met with a sight that made my blood run cold. The man wore a white mask, simple, yet the painted mouth was done delicately. It would be pretty if not for the context it inserted itself into. I knew my life was in danger and I had to get out of there. There would be no point in begging or compromising, the smell of rust came off of him, blood. There was no compromising with a killer.
I thrashed violently in his grip, fighting against the large hands that held me tightly. A whine escaped my throat unintentionally at the pain traveling up my arm. Now that I got a good look at him, the man was not much bigger than me. Taller yes, but his frame was lanky. The thing that unsettled me most however was the fact that he didn't say anything. Nothing at all. Just stared at me with those blank empty sockets as he fought against my squirming. I was definitely stronger than I looked and I don't think this masked man was prepared for it as I locked eyes with him, his grip loosening just slightly.
I took this chance to rip his hand from my mouth and let out a blood curdling scream before slamming my forehead into his own. "Fuck you bitch!" The man finally howled in pain, stumbling backwards and grabbing at his head, the mask cracked and smeared with blood I'm sure was my own. I quickly pushed past him and took off at a sprint. 'run run run you can't let him catch you y/n' I thought this to myself over and over, using it to power my legs into keeping up their speed. I was almost hopefully, surely I had outrun him by now. Maybe he had given up the chase. Then I felt something grab at my hair and snatch me backwards.
I hit the concrete with a sharp gasp of air and thrashed against the masked man as he struggled to pin me. Finally I managed to knee him in the gut, which instead of getting him off of me, only pissed him off worse. My hair was grabbed again and my head was slammed backwards against the pavement. I cried out as white hot pain seared through my head, making its way down my entire body. This was it, I was going to die here. I was going to die at the hand of some faceless monster who stalks the night.
When the sound of sirens off in the distance had begun to grow louder I couldn't contain my relief. I laughed, ignoring the pain in my head I l a u g h e d. The man above me swore under his breath and looked down at my weak and beaten form. "I'll be back for you later" a sharp paint hit my gut as he landed a kick before taking off through the city.
I had escaped him. Despite everything I was free of the horrible man. Flashes of red and blue crossed my vision as the police cars came to a halt around me. My eyes were heavy, I was so tired. "Woah hey y/n stay awake stay with me" a deep voice broke through the haze. My eyes fluttered up lazily to the man above me. It was that puppy dog eyed man from the college. His name, what was his name again? Brian. That's right it was Brain. "W-what are you-" I groaned as pain pulsed through my head. "Sh sh sh hey don't speak. I'll explain everything later" his warm hand rested on my cheek and I leaned into it, I was so cold. "Hmmm nice" I grumbled, earning a deep rumble from Brian. I was so tired, I wanted to sleep. My eyes closed, unable to hold the weight anymore "hey! Y/n! Come on now, don't go to-" but his voice trailed off as I welcomed the darkness that swallowed me.
