Beep beep beep beep
A groan escaped my throat as I slowly moved my head. I felt like I had been hit by a train going over a hundred miles an hour. A throbbing soreness radiated throughout my entire body, especially my head. With a bit of hesitation I finally allowed my eyes to creep open. The first thing my eyes saw were white walls, then a white ceiling, and finally a white tile floor. I was in a hospital. That thought was only confirmed by the bed I was in and all the machines next to me. I tried to move my arm but wires and a tube hung off of it so I let it rest and instead used my other arm to rub the sleep out of my eyes. Spots crossed my vision for a second but faded.
I took a closer look at all my surroundings. I was alone. Of course I was alone. I was hoping at least someone would be here caring about what had happened to me…..what had happened to me? That's weird. I couldn't even remember why I was here. Closing my eyes once more I did my best to focus on the events of last night. I was walking back from my study group and then…..nothing. I don't remember a single thing. A ringing started in my head and it began to hurt even worse the more I tried to remember what happened. A groan escaped my chest once more. "Fuck" I mumbled, rubbing my eyes again.
Then I heard humming coming down the hall. No thought went to it at first but then it came closer to the door and I recognized the voice. It was my roommate and probably my best friend since I came to college. My hunch was confirmed as the person in question came skipping into the room. When they saw me a frown came to their face "awww I wanted to be here when you woke up" with a cup of coffee in each hand they came over, handing one to me. God they were my saving grace. I needed a lot of things right now but coffee was a good start.
The frown had been replaced by a grin as they sat on the floor next to me ignoring the perfectly good chair right next to the bed. They were very anti chairs for some reason. The person in question was rather short compared to most, sitting at five foot even. They had sort of a pale tan skin and sported a brunette mullet that had bangs covering their eyes. I don't think I had ever even seen their eyes so I don't know the color. Even when they're sleeping they keep their eyes covered by a sleep mask. I had once considered taking their sleeping mask off but they never went to sleep until I did and they were always awake before me. That and I figured it was an insecurity thing and so I respected them for it.
They were covered in a lot of scars. Three very faint lines ran diagonally across their left cheek starting from under the bangs of that side of their face. A huge scar went widthwise around the front of their neck surrounded by tinier scratches. And on the bare shoulder that was showing, a large patch of discolored skin (another scar). Honestly they were all kind of unsettling. When I had finally got up the nerves to ask my roommate how they got the scars they very hesitantly answered "dog attack" and never spoke of it again. I understood, after all those scars looked old so it must have happened when they were young. That had to have been really traumatizing.
Their name was Rae Merin Charlton but they just had me refer to them as Rae or R. I wasn't sure of their gender when we first met because I had my roommate ad marked as co-ed and they were very androgynous. When I had finally asked they told me they didn't identify with a gender and told me their pronouns were they/them. I respected it, I may not entirely understand but I definitely respected it.
Rae had a really nice aesthetic that matched pretty well with their personality. It was a mix of blacks, reds, with silver jewelry to accent. Today their choice of clothing was a very large black sweater that hung off their shoulders due to the size. A thin choker with a silver upside down cross was fastened to their neck matching the silver of the many rings on their fingers. Fingers that were hidden by the 'paws' of their sweater. The sweater went down to mid thigh and the slightest sliver of a black skirt peaked out. Their legs were decorated by fishnets and a pair of strapped boots adorned their feet. It was a pretty well put together look. I described their style a lot as goth hobo. Rae thought it was absolutely hilarious.
