"Liam, what does he mean HUNTERS?" Mason asked, eyes wide with concern.
"It's not like I WASN'T gonna tell you!" Liam quickly said, waving his hands as though to dismiss the idea before it even formed in Mason's mind. "I was going to! Just.... not yet...." He winced at his own words. He absolutely loved sounding like a huge oaf right when he was about to make up with his best friend!
"Well, as much as I'd love to watch you keep making a fool of yourself," Theo spoke up again, grinning with obvious amusement, "I actually came to tell you that that blonde guy, the really tall one- you know him, right?- yeah, I heard he was plotting against you. And as fun as it would be to see you all fall to your demise, that was old me! New and improved Theo is here, and I'm on your side now!"
His grin threw Liam off and he made a face that expressed so.
"What? You don't believe me?" Theo asked, throwing his arms up and back at his side in exasperation, grin gone, his eyes rolling. "What kinda like id a guy supposed to come up with to get into a pack?"
"Yeah, no, I definitely do NOT believe you, you deadass just lied," Liam said, sounding and looking more confused than anything else. "Why do you want to be a part of the pack?"
"Those Hunters are out there," Theo said glancing out the window, then back at Liam and Mason, his gaze darkening. "They're killing to kill, not to protect anyone. I can't-" He cut himself off with an angry sigh, then continued. "I cant believe I'm gonna say this," he muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose, then said more clearly, "I can't face them alone. I'll die. And I don't want to die."
Liam and Mason exchanged a look, then Liam spoke.
"Dude, it's not even my choice on who gets to be in the pack. I'm not the alpha. Scott is. Go ask him," he said, then gestured to the window as if to say "Now get out," but Theo shook his head.
"I am NOT about to go beg to Scott for help."
"But you'll beg Liam for help?" Mason said, his voice sounding close to a sneer, and Liam held back an amused smile.
"I'm not- yes, okay, yeah, I will. 'Cause Scott doesn't have not even one cell in his entire being that will trust me." Theo looked frustrated, but almost embarrassed as well. He nodded towards Liam, eyes holding Liam's gaze. "But you have at least three smart brain cells among the stupid ones that might believe and trust me. And for good reason, too. I don't want to die," he reiterated the final part. "I've been through it once; I don't want to do it all over again. Just.... please. Talk to Scott. Convince him. He's a.... he's a nice guy, and he'll listen to you."
Like he had the day before, Liam felt bad. There was almost a pained, scared look in Theo's eyes that made him want to cradle him in his arms and tell him everything would be okay, that he would protect him and make the pack accept him.
But then again, why the hell would he do that?
He had to remind himself once more that Theo was a liar. And that's probably all he would ever be.
"No."
Theo's face fell.
"I'm sorry, but I can't do that." Liam shook his head and looked at Mason in hopes that his friend would agree with his choice. To his relief, Mason gave him a small nod of approval. "You've been absolutely awful, Theo. None of us can ever forget that. No one would ever believe you would change. I don't even think it's possible. In fact...." He hesitated, then finished the statement. "In fact, if the Hunters kill you, it'd be just another win for us."
Theo's expression was unreadable, but it made Liam uncomfortable that he had to look away.
"I'm sorry," he repeated. He was surprised his voice was still coming out clearly.
"Fine." Theo's voice was low and hoarse, seemingly like he was about to cry, and Liam managed to find the courage to look at him again, and found not tears in his eyes, but rage and hurt. "Fine, but you'll regret it, Liam. You'll regret not having me around to save your sorry ass." And like that, he was gone, leaving like he had entered. Silently and bitterly.
"That was probably the most civil I've ever seem him," Mason broke the silence. "And that's saying a lot considering he basically threatened us."
"He threatened me, Mason, not you," Liam sighed, dropping down to sit on his bed once more, feeling tiredness seep into him like water through hands.
"If he threatened you, he threatened me too." Mason sat down beside Liam and shoulder bumped him, a small, reassuring smile on his face. "We're in this together, right? I'm the Stiles to your Scott."
