New beginnings

Chapter 2

I wake up to this wretched sound echoing through the walls. I pray it goes away because the clock above the door says it's still way too early. But instead, it only gets worse and then there's silence. I shoot up from my bed and try and peek through my door in hopes I see something. Unfortunately, I can't see shit, but that's when I hear two of the workers talking. "I can't believe he's had another success." one of them says. "Yeah, I know but this one seems like a threat, why would he give her that kind of power?" the other one responds.

I drop down to the floor and cover my eyes. It has to be Jules they're talking about, there haven't been any new people here in months. I lean my head back against the door and wonder what they meant by powers and her being a danger. Although I couldn't think of anything even though the possibilities are endless. I guess I'll have to wait till breakfast.

The hours ticked by slow but my escorts to mealtime were finally here. I impatiently walked between them as we approached the dining room. I was there before Jules, but that's usually how it is anyways. I get my food and I go sit at our regular table. I look at the clock before I start eating. There's still plenty of time for her to show up. So, I eat my food like normal and zone out until moments later I hear a chair scraping the floor. It's Jules, but something seems different about her. Her energy is stronger than usual, but she looks drained as hell. When she sits down, I look at her and ask her if she's okay. She's quiet and doesn't respond so I go back to eating my food, she must not be in the mood.

"They're fun time juice finally kicked in this morning." I hear her whisper. I'm quiet in case she has more to say. "It feels like an electrical current is running through my body, it woke me up out of my sleep I couldn't do anything but scream." I looked up at her and saw a tear rolling down her face. I knew it was best to let her finish talking. "It was so much pain, Aaron. But that's not all, my eyes glow this Firey red."

"I heard it all this morning. Two of the guards were talking about you saying whatever power he gave you is dangerous." I say to her as I stir around my peas. "So, whatever it is lay low for now or you might get locked in the chamber." Her head shoots up as I say that. "What the hell is the chamber?" she asks. "It's some lower level room without anything in it and high security they send people who are harmful. They keep you down there without food for days until you break." I tell her. "You think-." She's cut off by the bell and we're marched to our first duty of the day.

But instead of different directions, we head in the same direction. We look at each other and I know we're wondering the same thing. What the hell is going on? Of course, the first duty of the day is hand-to-hand combat so, what are they going to do to make us fight? When we get to the combat field the guards leave and I see Ralph standing there with his hands in his pockets. He looks up at us and just says "Sorry guys."

"Aaron, we got to get out of here just follow my lead," Jules whispered to me as we approached Ralph.

"Listen up guys today is going to be different, you're going to be fighting each other," Ralph says in a slightly shaky tone. "Anything goes, there's no such thing as cheating, so do what you have to win."

I look at Jules and she just nods before she runs at me full speed. I start to back away once I see the electricity flowing from her hands. But it's too late it sends me flying and crashing into the ground. She's still approaching me, so I kneel and thrust my wings down. This only delays her. She comes running at me again this time with more force. I wrap my wings around me and I only feel a small tingle pulsate through me. Cool, I think to myself. This time when she tries again, I pick her up and begin to fly and spin in a circle until I release her. Without meaning it she crashes into ralph. She takes a little bit to get back on her feet but when she does, she signals for me to come at her. So, I begin to dive towards her as if I'm going to crash into her. Jules lifts her arms in the air as I near her. Once I got close enough, I grabbed Jules and began to gain some altitude, and head towards the walls. Before we could even clear them Jules yells, "Wait, there's some sort of electrical field around the perimeter, I can feel it!" As I'm about to respond she's already shooting an electrical current out and what do you know there is a force field there.

"Jules, I don't think that's going to work," I say, but she keeps going anyways. I turn my head to check if Ralph is still where we left him but he's nowhere to be found. That's when the alarms start blaring, they're on to us now. "Jules, you're going to have to hurry it up!" I say. "I'm trying my best." She says as she applies more force. When she does this a-hole starts to form in the field. "That's it keep going!" I yell. I turn to see guards rushing towards us. "we've got company!" I tell her. "I'm doing my best." She says through gritted teeth. The hole starts to slowly get bigger. Just a little bit more and we can fit through. Jules gives it one last blast and it's just enough for us to get the hell out of there. I fly back some so I can get a little bit then dive towards the hole. "Tuck your legs, it's gonna be tight!"

We get through the hole just barely, I think it singed some of my feathers on the way through. But before the coast isn't clear yet I hear shooting from behind us. I start to fly in a zig-zag pattern in order to dodge their fire. They only have a small opening to aim at us as long as we're not near that we're good. "Fly all the way left!" Jules demands. I swoop left to better avoid their aim. But this doesn't matter because when I look behind me, I see the field starting to drop. "Our ass is grass," she says. "Not just yet," I say as I start to fly higher.

The bullets can only go so high, as long as I'm high enough we should be good. I keep going higher and higher until I no longer hear bullets zipping past us. I look down at Jules, "You good down there?" I ask her. "I'm okay." She responds. I stop going higher and continue ahead. I have no clue where we're going but I don't care as long as it's far far away from there.

I fly until I can't anymore, and start looking for somewhere to land. "Over there." I hear and look to see what she's talking about. I look down to see a small shack. I quickly descend towards it. As we near closer to the ground I slow down so I can hover and let Jules down. Once I let go of her I at once drop to the ground. My body is sore from flying so long while carrying Jules. "I'll be okay, I just need to rest. I tell her. I start to get up and she rushes to my side to help me. We make our way towards the shack. It's old and dusty but I don't care as long as it has somewhere to lay down. Once we get, I look around and immediately spot a bust-up couch and point for Jules to take me towards it. Once close enough I collapsed onto it. "I'm gonna see if there are any food and water in here," Jules says to me as she walks towards what appears to be a kitchen.
