This day wasn't on the list of things Charlene wanted to do this summer. Spending her entire summer with The Watsons wasn't apart of her things to do this summer either. With Janis's growing crush on Lance and her mother's visual pain from carrying the entire work load of the house, decisions must be made. Though Gloria told Charlene to go out and enjoy the short time she has left with her friends, it didn't seem like a good idea anymore. Charlene didn't have an outfit to wear to the lake and that would be her number one reason why she'd change her mind.
"How do I look?" Janis came strutting out the bathroom in a yellow swimsuit with black polka dots. The bra covered most of her chest and the bottoms went up to her waist and stopped right bellow her bottom. She did a twirl which made Charlene giggle.
"It's beautiful."
Janis grabbed her beach bag and stuffed two towels in it. Charlene sat down and watched her move about while trying to think of ways to break the news to her. "Why are you sitting there? Lance will be outside any second."
"Uhm... I looked in my suitcase and turns out I didn't pack a swimsuit after all. I don't want to go in my day clothes so... I can't go."
Janis scoffed while swiping a hand at Charlene as if she was shooing the problem away. "I have a million swimsuits, Charlene. You should have just asked." She then went to her drawer and picked out a one-piece swimsuit with blue diagonal lines. "This color would look so cute on you." She tossed it at Charlene who wanted more than anything to toss it right back. "Go on. Try it on."
Charlene knew it would be too small. She was way more developed than Janis but didn't want to say anything about it. Instead, she went to the restroom and squeezed into the swimsuit that was given to her. Her breast poked out the sides a bit and she knew it made her bottom look too big.
The moment she stepped out of the bathroom, she grabbed her towel out of the bag and tied it around her waist. Janis quickly turned to see Charlene sitting on the bed nervously. "It looks so good on you!" She started to go over and remove the towel but the sound of a truck horn going off caused her to stop in her tracks. "My God! That's him!"
The two girls scurried out of the bedroom to the kitchen where Gloria and Anne had sandwiches and cokes sitting out on the table.
"You two look very prepared." Charlene quickly crossed her arms over her chest before her mother could say anything. Anne then put the food in their lake bag before giving Janis a kiss and Charlene a hug. Gloria gave Charlene a hug then let the two girls out the front door.
"He brought Johnny!" Janis squealed while skipping to the dirt road. Charlene did her best to keep up while also making sure her towel didn't hit the ground. "Hey, Johnny! I haven't seen you since you graduated!"
The two hollered at each other like they were closest friends and Charlene didn't doubt for a second that they were. She hung out with these people on a regular basis. Charlene had a completely opposite friend group attraction.
"This is my best friend, Charlene!" She shouted excitingly at Johnny. The slightly chubby boy with light brown hair and a dingy muscle shirt gave Charlene a look with his eyes that sent chills down her spine. "We've been friends since for ever. God knows I needed her here with me this summer."
"Charlene, huh?" Johnny said while helping her into the backseat of the truck. It was no accident that his hand got a slight hold of her bottom which made her gasp and quickly sit down in her seat. "Nice to meet you," he winked while closing the back door.
Lance started up his truck as Johnny got comfortable in the passengers seat. The whole ride consisted of his eyes glued to Charlene's eyes from the rear view mirror as she tried her best to look anywhere but at him.
