Anne was a proud mother. She had three beautiful girls who were all heading towards a bright future in life. They all looked exactly like her as if she impregnated herself. Cecil was busy as always. He spent very little of his time talking to his wife or his children. By the time everyone was done eating breakfast, he'd be in the busiest part of the state making deals that some could never forgive.

Charlene spent ten minutes sat on the front porch and watched him leave instead of helping set the table. Her mother didn't mind since she always had everything covered. The only thing Charlene was concerned with was when the real work would take place.

"Are you okay?" Janis asked while placing a hand on Charlene's shoulder. The girl didn't know she was lost staring at the dirt road instead of paying attention to reality.

She looked up at Janis and smiled before jumping to her feet. "Yep. Just still a bit tired is all." She dusted off her dress while following the blonde girl into the house where breakfast sat ready and hot. "It smells really good. Thank you for the breakfast momma and Mrs. Watson."

The girls sat down in front of their plates. Sarah skipped in to the room a few seconds later with a smile on her face to claim her spot. "Morning Princess," Anne kissed Sarah on her forehead softly. "What's the plan for today?"

"Going to Daria's house this afternoon. It's her birthday."

Her mother nodded before looking at Janis and Charlene. "You two don't mind taking the walk to Daria's house and keep Sarah safe? It's straight down the road there." Janis rolled her eyes. "You don't mind, right Janis?"

"It's not like we have a choice." She stabbed her egg around as Charlene nervously tried to maintain eye contact with her plate. "It'll be worth it if Lance Skinner is back home. Charlene and I will stop there on the way back."

"You and that boy." Her mother groaned.

Charlene placed her fork on her plate while slowly wiping her lips. "Who is... uh... Lance Skinner?"

Sarah didn't waste a second to spill everything she knew. "A farmers boy a mile down. They go to school together and Janis swore up and down that he's the one to settle with her. But if he hasn't asked now then he never will."

Janis kicked Sarah's leg from under the table. "They don't ask until graduation you fart! Lance is gonna do it. Mom said he would."

Anne smirked at Gloria who looked a bit lost but didn't want to ask any invading questions. "Dating a Skinner is like pennies from heaven. Them boys are sitting on so much money when they're old man dies. Janis doesn't know what she's getting herself into."

"Second he asks me, we're moving closer to Gail. She'll be so happy the family is back together."

Sarah rolled her eyes while taking her plate over to the sink. "If he ask you out of the fifty people in your class, I doubt he has eyes on you." She rushed away before Janis could get up and hit her once more.

"Sarah doesn't know what she's on about. She's crazy because she knows she'll die alone with such a big head of hers." Janis was next to put her dish in the sink. "Come on, Charlene. The sooner we drop her off, the sooner she'll get stranded there."

Charlene looked to her mother who nodded. She then went to put her dish in the sink and got dragged along to whatever part of the house Janis pulled her to.

An hour later, the three of them were headed down the dry and dusty road to Daria's house. Approximately two miles out and almost an hour walk away.

The entire time, Sarah and Janis bickered about a boy Charlene had no idea about. She watched and laughed instead to avoid being quiet and awkward which is her usual self around other people.
