"Look," Nick said, "here on the family tree you can see-"
"Dracula?" May shrieked.
Nick laughed. "Oh, yeah. Dracula, your great-grandad. A nice dude, actually - as far as I've heard. And obviously he doesn't have anything to do with that count Dracula dude from the famous story. His parents just probably found it funny to name him after a blood-addict monster, I don't know."
"As far as you've heard?" Sam frowned. "If he's our great-grandfather, he's your grandfather and you should know him- or did he..."
"He disappeared before I was born." Nick sighed. "A bit of a sadly funny story, actually. It was your mother's first birthday, back in March 1987, and he wanted to help her blow out the birthday candles. And well, as he was one of the strongest vampires I've ever heard of, he underestimated his storm powers and- well, nobody knows what exactly happened. He got teleported away, somehow. Together with Venus, his wife."
"Teleported away?" May stared at Nick in unbelief.
"Yeah, his wind powers somehow opened a portal to another world." Nick's eyes became dark and he looked to the ground as he spoke on. "And that he didn't return from that other world indicates that he died there."
Sam grabbed the family tree from Nick's hands. "So that's why Dracula and Venus are declared dead with these crosses. And what about the rest of our family? Crosses everywhere! Looks like a graveyard, fits the vampire vibe," she attempted to joke but she knew herself how shitty that was, and so she just mumbled an excuse to Nick.
"It's all his fault," Nick said, staring into the void. "Falk Darksky. Hate him so much. We all did. But it's just me left at this point. Me and you two."
"Nick...?" May asked carefully.
"Hm?" Nick flinched and looked up, blushing. "Sorry. I got lost in memories. Sad memories. You know, it's only the three of us left in this family now."
"But why-?"
"My mother was the heir of the throne after Dracula disappeared. But her brother - Falk Storm - wanted nothing more than to be the ruler of the vampire kingdom. He wanted power and wealth, I guess. So he gathered a small army to fight Mum, and he won because she was unprepared. This was in '87, I think, and my sister Fay had just been born. Mum fled with her husband and Annalena and Fay down here in the south of Germany, and Falk took their castle. For some years Mum just let him do whatever he wanted. She didn't want to give up her family. But at some point, around 2000, she decided she couldn't take it anymore, so she and Dad left us alone, with foster parents
to travel to the North Sea coast and fight Falk. I was seven back then, Annalena was 14 and Fay was 12. The rebel kid she was, Fay ran away and took a train to follow our parents. To be honest I don't know a lot about what happened after that. Just that at some point our foster parents told us that they were all dead. Mum and Dad, Fay and her boyfriend. It was just Annalena and me then, and our uncle that had even taken his wife's last name, Darksky, to differ from his family." Nick's voice broke. "Annalena thought it was her duty to finish what her parents had begun, so when she was 17 she traveled to the coast too. She returned pregnant and with her husband Leonard. I was so glad she was alive, you know, but when you were two years old she said she and Leonard had to leave again to fight Falk, and as they suspected it'd be a terrible fight, they decided to give you in the hands of foster parents, and had me promise that if they wouldn't return I'd visit you after your 15th birthday to tell you the truth - not earlier because Annalena wanted you to have a healthy, careless youth, different to her own. I was 14 back then, actually, and I barely understood what that would mean for the future. And well. Annalena and Leonard didn't return. Falk hasn't sent me any triumphant letter about having killed them, but that doesn't mean they aren't dead. Maybe he has just forgotten about my existence." Nick's voice turned bitter with the last words. "To be honest, all those years I've clung to the thought that they are still alive. But I am not sure anymore. They would've come visit me, wouldn't they?"
It took Sam a few moments to capture all he had said, all the feelings and stories he'd just told. Ironically, the first thing that came to her mind was how so many of his songs made sense now.
"But, Nick," May said in that second. "What if they tried to get in touch with you but couldn't because you're famous? Or maybe they're still locked up in Falk's castle as he waits for you to come try to free them?"
"Yeah, and then? Then what?" Nick said and got up from his chair. Sam wanted to stop him from leaving but he just stretched and walked up and down on the porch for a few seconds, then dropped back onto the chair. "Look, girls, if your parents are locked up in Falk's castle and I come over and try to rescue them, then Falk will kill them right in front of my eyes to torture me, and then he will kill me too. And if I go to Falk's castle but they're dead already then I am going to die in vain."
Sam looked at May, and May looked at Sam, and a light wind breezed.
"I can't believe you're giving up that easy," Sam then slowly said. "What if I tell you that I feel that they're alive? What if I-"
"Sam," Nick said softly, "I can understand that you're angry at me. I am angry at myself for being such a coward too. And you know, I've just made my decision. As soon as you two have your powers - as soon as you can defend yourself if I should die - I will travel to the coast and visit Falk. Though if I don't return I want you to stay away from everything related to this. I cant let the last Storm family members die too. What do you think?"
Sam and May exchanged another look and the wind grew stronger.
"Personally," Sam said, "I think you're an idiot."
She watched how Nick flinched in surprise, then she spoke on. "I am afraid of this, terrified rather, but I will join you. The more we are, the more of a chance do we stand against Falk."
"I- I am in too," May said and took Sam's hand. "And I'm sure Tancred and Lysander will join as well. Which makes four of us. And you, Nick."
Nick bit his lip. "You two- you faintly remind me of Fay. And I suspect if I forbid you to join me you will follow me anyway. So let's say... we will do this. Together. As soon as you've got your magic powers. Sounds good?"
