When Silver was nine years old, she got to pick a dragon. Of course, every child her age got to pick a dragon, but Silver was special. Dragons liked Silver, a lot actually. When she was five, her fathers dragon let her sleep on his stomach. When she was six, her mother's dragon would play outside with her. When she was eight her brothers dragon, for he had just turned nine and had gotten his own, took her on a joy ride around the island.

Silver was special.

Now, many other people could get along with dragons just fine. The people of the island where quite well known for their unusual co-existence with dragons, but it is not every day that a dragon will take an unknown eight year old for a joy ride and bring her back unharmed.

There was nothing else special about Silver. She had brown hair, and tan skin. Her eyes where a normal brown, and she had freckles. But for whatever reason, dragons liked her. Many started calling her dragon whisperer.

Now, Silver was at the hatchery looking at all of the available eggs. The one she chose would be her companion for life. Now the options where:

A Golden Drum egg. A species of dragon that was extremely vocal and had a golden tint to their bright scales

A Blue Fury egg. A dragon that flames at an exceptionalLy hot temperature, producing blue flames. They are also prone to losing their temper.

A Purple Clam egg. A dragon with out wings and with out legs, that primarily swims in water. A pretty color too.

An Orange Spurt egg. possibly the most colorful dragon, with their base color being orange, and their wings dotted with many other colors.

And a small Black Monarch egg. The shyest of dragons, and quite small, they suit very well for a family.

The rest of the dragon eggs where either too young or not the offspring of a tamed dragon. So those where the options.

"Why must i chose?" Asked Silver. "They all are wonderful."

"Because dear," her mother explained, "all of the other children need a dragon too."

"Oh, okay." Silver said, "but why these dragons?"

"Because dear," her mother explained once again, " the other dragon eggs aren't ready, or their dragon moms won't let them have a human."

"No." Silver said.

"No?" Her mother said, confused.

"There is a baby egg still in the place where they keep all of the eggs. And that dragon is ready to hatch."

"Dear, how about I ask one of the caretakers to see if they can double check."

"That would be good."

And so the mother left to speak with one of the caretakers.

"We will double check ma'am."

"Thank you" the mother said and walked back to where Silver was standing.

A few moments past and another egg was placed with the others.

It was silver. Silver-blue. And it was exceptionally small.

The average dragon egg was about the size of a coconut, give or take a few inches.

But this egg was about the size of an eagle egg.

And wouldn't you know it. That was the egg that Silver chose.
