May 1, 2001

It was six o'clock in the morning and Daiya was beyond late. For the past week she had been restless, going to sleep late at night and waking up even later. She took classes at the community college that unfortunately started at six thirty. It was finals week.

Daiya rushed to get her and her two year old son, Dezmond, ready. She had to drop him off  at his daycare that was luckily ten minutes away from the college. However, the drive from her apartment to the daycare at this time in the morning, with traffic, was going to take at least thirty minutes.  There was no way she was going to make it time.

Daiya grabbed her purse, keys, phone, book bag, and a sleeping Dezmond from her bed. She checked the time.

6:10

"Let me call your daddy and see if he can take you to day care." She said while balancing her phone in between her ear and her shoulder.

"Jay?" She asked once she heard him answer the phone.

"What Daiya, it's six in the morning bruh come on." He ranted

"I know. I know. I'm sorry it's just that I'm running late to class and I need you to take Dez for me. It's finals week I can't miss this Jay."

Jaylon sighed into the phone, very annoyed with his baby mama's last minute and early in the morning demands.

Three years ago, Jaylon would've done anything for Daiya. They were both high school seniors and were well known amongst their peers. They won cutest couple, prom queen and king, and were basically everyone's "relationship goals."

It was until Daiya got pregnant that everything went south. Jaylon wasn't ready for a child. He was too busy focused on his money and the streets. Daiya however was anti abortion.  She made her bed, so she was going to lay in it.

"Nah, D I can't take little man. I'm making moves today."

"Jaylon you haven't seen him in a week and a half! I really need you just today please."

"I'm busy."

"Jaylon, please."

"Daiya get off my line with the bullshit."

With that, Jaylon hung up. Daiya sighed out of fustration that not only Jaylon wouldn't take their son, but now she just wasted five minutes arguing with him.

Daiya has always had to pull most of the weight when it came to co-parenting with Jaylon. She just wished he would come through sometimes.

Pushing her anger aside, she hurriedly left her apartment. She threw her purse and backpack into the passenger seat of the car and strapped Dezmond in his car seat.

Daiya did sixty miles per hour the whole way to her son's daycare. She knew it was a bit fast for the forty five miles per hour speed limit, but she would rather get a speeding ticket than fail the whole course due to her being late.

Daiya arrived to his daycare in ten minutes because morning traffic wasn't as heavy, but the rain was. She pulled up to ABC Learning Center and hurriedly got a wide awake Dezmond from his carseat, and rushed inside the facility. She quickly signed him in and handed him to the daycare attendent after kissing him on the forehead.

"Mommy loves you Dezmond. I'll see you when I get back okay?"

Dezmond shook his head, smiling and waving at Daiya.

"Otay mommy. I luv u mommy."

"I love you more." Daiya said taking one last look at her son before leaving the building.

A 20 year old woman was killed today in a single car crash on the corner of Roosevelt Road and Johnson Boulevard.

Witnesses say Daiya Nichole Davis was heading northbound on Johnson Boulevard in a black 2000 Lexus, when she lost control of the car and overturned into a ditch.

Investigators suspect because of the heavy rain, Davis lost control of the car due to the car hydroplaning. Davis was killed on site due to impact. More on this story at 12.
