On October 20th, 1978, at 2 o'clock in the morning, two days after Nathan and Kelly's death, Mark writes a letter and hides it under one of the floorboards in the house.

The letter reads as follows:

"I tried, I tried as hard as I could to stay away from it all. After this I've finally realized, it's not possible to have peace, this fucking world is full of shit. After what I've seen... I could taste Kelly's blood soaking through her clothes, I could feel how scared she was before she couldn't feel anymore. Nathan just laid there stiff, I looked into his eyes, and I wished... oh I wished so fucking hard that he would just look back, just blink once... If only I kept talking to them just a few seconds more before they left the house, just a few fucking seconds, but no, I had to sit there and watch them leave without saying a word. Or maybe I could have woken them up just a bit earlier, just a few seconds... Fuck it... I don't understand it, I did everything right, I stayed away from it all, but my mistakes came back to bite me. Fuck it... I'm getting off topic, if you read this, I am sorry. I know this is wrong, but I don't care anymore... I can't even protect my children, what kind of a man am I!? There's no point in me being here anyways, it won't make any difference if I'm gone. Shit I don't know, maybe I'll see them in heaven or something. Oh fuck... I'm sorry John, I am sorry, I know I'm a fucking coward, but I can't take care of you anyways, maybe you'll be safer with me gone... What am I fucking doing...? I'm sorry." After hiding the letter, Mark sneaks out of the front door and slowly walks around the house to the back. He goes inside the shed where he keeps his tools. A few minutes pass but silence. Another five minutes with no noise at all but the loud barking of dogs somewhere far away... click, Bang!!! A deafening gunshot rips through the air. The gunshot travelled miles. The barking wasn't so loud after all, in fact the barking stops completely. For a few seconds there was absolute silence, not a sound. Then can be heard a scream so loud and so terrifying that you can feel the pain that is channeled through it. Elise runs out of the house and heads straight to the shed. She's crying over Marks body, which has blood all over the back of the head and dripping from the mouth. She stands there shocked not knowing what to do. And then she hears a scared voice saying: "Dad?" She looks back and sees little John standing there with tears dripping down his face. Elise quickly rushes John to get inside the house and then calls 911.

This night will forever be engraved in John's mind for the rest of his life.
