𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐡𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐲. The sun, on its higher point, hit on the deserted dark road and made the ground boil. The sky was a clean blue without a single cloud to be seen. Flat, dry and monotonous, a cropland that surrounded the entirety of the small village.Four lonely car wheels hit the pavement with its windows rolled down, someone's arm feeling the wind. On his wrist, a cheap digital blue watch marked three in the afternoon. It was normal to see no one out at this hours on a summer evening, they were the only ones on the town streets once they finally got there.
On the driver seat, a long black mane swung back and forth and wrinkly hands hold the wheel. A loose blouse hanged on her and she wore no makeup, she was a simple woman going back to a simpler life. The back of the car was packed with things; shoes, books, clothes, pillows... It was clear the ones in the car were moving into the village.
While looking at the old wooden houses and the trees surrounding them, the watch-boy whistled a melody only he knew. The chirp of the cicadas decorated his simple melody as if they had been practising for him to come and welcome him.
The boy smiled.
The place was green and orange, it was filled with conker and golden rain trees. The houses felt like they were built decades ago, with falling wall paint and long bindweeds. They passed by a small school, its walls were pained white and the fences a deep green, almost blending with a couple of trees that surrounded it.
On the back door of the school, with bushes on each side, a small black cat made its way to the centre of it and sat down comfortably. The cat looked peaceful, used to being there, like if it was its safe place. The boy looked at it for the little time he was able to, wanting to stare at the black cat forever.
𝐎𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐧, another boy laid under the hot sun; no shirt, red shorts—that matched with his hair—and black flip-flops. The young boy had his earphones on, which were also red, and was blasting 'Kingslayer' from Bring Me The Horizon. His lips mouthed the words to the song and his feet swung to the beat.
"Kid... Kid!" His grandfather called, "Go do the laundry," and without complaining, he got up and did as told, the music still on. He hanged out the washing humming to its melody, sweat was covering him as time passed. The hottest days of summer were slowly going away, but today it was specially hot.
The houses there weren't small, but they weren't big either. They needed space to store the wheat and the cotton their fields made. He finished with the clothes and with jazzy steps made his way to the inside of the house where a fan was trying to spit cold air—it was failing miserably since it was so hot.
An old lady with white hair in a bun was sitting in front of it, an old TV playing in the background. He got in and hopped on a couch, taking out his phone and scrolling through his camera gallery.
The photo. There it was.
He got up in a jump and told his grandparents he was heading out. He had the leftovers of today's lunch on his backpack. "Heading out," he mumbled putting on a shirt before running away. The path he followed wasn't paved, he knew every street and shortcut in the village. His feet moved fast and the high sun was making his skin boil. Finally, he arrived at his destination.
At the back of his primary school, a black cat was waiting for him.
