In 1906 the disney clan moved to marceline, a town in the middle of rural missouri. The children were all excited to live on a farm. The Disneys lived in a one forty-five acres of farmlandabd orchards boasting "every kind of apple you ever hearf of", as Walt described. The area was filled with small animals and birds. The natural surroundings were a great escape for the Disney children from their difficult home life. In summer, they fished for catfish and went swimming in the local creek with the other children in the neighborhood. In winter, they would sled down to the creek and skate on its frozen surface.
Even five-year old Walthad responsibilities on the farm. His job was to watch out for the pigs and make sure they didn't get into trouble. One of the pigs seemedto take a shine to Walt. Her name was skinny, and she would wonder over to the house looking for him. Walt loved all the animals on the farm and make sure to say hello to each one every morning as he went out to the barn to start his chores. These early experiences inspired his later work.
Walt didn't go to school until he was seven. The other siblings and his parents were too busy to take him, so they just kept him at home until his little sister was old enough to go to school, too. The late start didn't bother Walt much. He didn't care much for studies, although he liked the opportunities to make his classmate laugh.
