A few congested light rays squeezed their way through the blinds of her window— warmly tickling her face and trying to wake her up. But the chirping of local birds had it before the rays did.
The pacific war between those birds produced this composed song of nature. It made her remember her childhood— when she used to visit her grandmother's village in India, and how those sparrows kept twittering under the eaves of her home. A smile formed on her lips, unbeknownst to her, as she got up from the bed.
She snoozed the alarm on her phone and the chirpings stopped. Ugh, how delusional can I be? How stupid of her to go down the memory lane again, she mentally scolded herself.
She was dubious if the rays of light were artificial, too, just like the tweets. Sunlight? In Chestwood? How's that possible? She made out what just happened and rushed to open the blinds, but was abruptly attacked by a full-beaming sun— shining on the peak of everyone's head like a King.
"Wow, I think it's one of those 'Nivedita getting shocked' days." She broke down in a yawn and lazily departed to the bathroom. Dressing in the professional overalls, she checked her bag for all the indispensable items.
But before going down to torture her taste buds with a hot, black-coffee, she decided to check up on her irresponsible excuse of a brother and make amends— the task that he should have done, not her.
It took her three steps to reach his door, but knocking on the door was never in their rule-books. She threw the door open, only for her larynx to produce a loud and shrill-scream.
"What happened?" Mrs Rai started rushing upstairs from the kitchen. Her hand was on her heart and her lips chanted numerous names of Gods.
"What the heck are you doing, Jay?" Nivedita rushed inside and turned the lights on. The room that was previously illuminated by only a few countable rays of light coming from the blinds, was now given the gift of brimming luminosity.
"Wh-what did I do?" Jay pulled his headphones down his neck and brought that song on his phone to a halt. "I was just listening to music." His baffled state did not spare him those upcoming profanities from his sister.
"You were banging your head in the air so hard. I thought you were freaking possessed!" She hit his head and took his phone from his hands. "And why were the lights off?"
"Well, that's how you get the real feel of metal, you faint-hearted vernac. Turn the lights off, put your headphones on, and get lost in the world of music." He smirked as he was honoured by his self-proclaimed superior taste in music. "And how did you manage to hit such a high note with your scream. Honestly, should you be in a Monster Inc. movie, that scream would have produced enough energy to fuel the whole Monstroplis for a century." His devilish smile and to-the-point sarcasm messed with the wrong wires in Nivedita's head as she fumed in anger.
"Is that so, you metalhead freak? Now, you just wait and watch." She unplugged the headphone wire from his phone and put it in her bag— not before giving him a deadly look.
"Are you gonna take away my phone? You'll regret that, girl. You'll regret that very badly." He stood upright to match Nivedita's height, only to reach her shoulder.
"Ah-ha! What're you gonna do?" She pinched his forehead with her nails and started pushing him back by the force of her index finger. Her eyes burned down with anger and his with fear caused by not-a-veiled-threat of her sister.
"I-I'll... I'll tell Ma!" He barely escaped her invisible clutch by ducking down to head to the door.
Mrs Rai came panting as if she had run a marathon. "What the hell...happened?" she asked in between her breaths.
