A giggle woke me from my somewhat restful sleep. I opened my eyes, squinting at the dim lights. The sky was dark red and orange through the window, and I glanced at the clock on the wall before my eyes settled on the little face grinning at me. Lav's toothy smile was all I needed to brighten my mood.

"Mama!" She squealed and almost toppled off my lap onto the ground, but I pulled her to my chest instead.

"Careful Lav," I laughed, and she babbled something unintelligible. She wasn't quite at the point where she could speak in full sentences, but the occasional word she could get out. The first time she said 'Mama' was a few weeks ago, and I had been overjoyed ever since. Jack was jealous though, because she only started saying 'Dadda' last week. I was secretly smug, but I tried not to mention it to him.

"Oh you're awake!" Jack walked into the room and I grinned lazily at him. "Dinner's almost ready. Do you want me to take this little goofball?" He changed his voice to a silly one, similar to that of a cartoon character that entertained Lavender, and she giggled, opening her arms to him. He pulled her off of me and lifted her into the air.

Watching my boyfriend and our daughter gave me such indescribable joy.

When I first found out that I was pregnant with Lavender, I was worried. I didn't think Jack and I were ready for this, and I was scared that he would leave when I told him. I almost didn't tell him, but I could never keep a secret from him. I started crying when I told him, and he just held me. He told me that no matter what he'd stay with me and that we'd raise this child together.

If only I had known at the time how happy I would be just under two years from that moment.

I stood up and immediately sat back down, dizzy. I put my head between my knees shakily, trying not to throw up. Jack put Lav down and knelt in front of me.

"What's wrong?" He held my shoulder lightly, supporting me.

"I - I'm just dizzy." I sat up and started to stand, but he held me down gently.

"I'll bring you guys dinner, okay? We can eat on the couch." Jack gave my shoulder a gentle squeeze and went to the kitchen where I could hear the timer on the stove beeping.

Lav toddled to me, not having quite mastered the art of walking but making a valiant attempt. She noticed my tired look and placed her hands over her eyes. "Peekaboo!" She squealed, uncovering them, and I smiled, pulling her onto my lap.

"Peekaboo!" I giggled back at her. She was such a sweet little kid, and this was proof. Whenever she was throwing a tantrum or even just crying for her various reasons, I would play peekaboo with her and she would go back to her happy self. Now here she was trying the same thing with me. I couldn't express how much love I had for this tiny human that was now playing with my hair. "I love you too Lav." I whispered into her hair, bringing her closer to my chest.

"Dinner's ready!" Jack exclaimed, walking into the room with two plates of mac & cheese, balancing a plastic bowl on top of his own. Lavender's favourite. "Trade?" He asked me, gesturing to the now wiggling girl on my lap with the plate in his hand.

Smiling, I held Lavender in a fashion not dissimilar to the opening scene from the lion king, and Jack took that as his queue to start singing the theme song at the top of his lungs.

"nAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASEBENYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA MANOWICHINAWAAAAAAAAAAAA" He belted out, and while his voice was hitting some pleasant sounding notes, I still had to point out his vague mispronunciation of the lyrics.

"Careful, you just said something very offensive about my mother..." I stuck my tongue out at him as he sat down next to me, leaning away in mock offense while we swapped the child for the plate.

"I'll have you know, I am an EXPERT at this song. It's never failed me on karaoke night with the guys." He stated proudly.

Lav gurgled happily as Jack placed her in her chair next to the couch, strapping her in so that she couldn't escape or topple to the ground. He set down the plastic bowl in front of her so that she could stab away at it with a plastic fork, which he handed to her next. At just over a year old, she wasn't quite proficient in feeding herself, but she loved trying. Jack had pulled her chair over next to the couch so that he could supervise her.

As we pressed play on the movie, I found myself watching my amazing boyfriend and our child playing 'here comes the airplane' and, in general, making a mess. I couldn't keep the grin off my face knowing that this was my family, and no matter what happened, I was going to love Lav unconditionally.

After all, ohana means family. Oh wait -- wrong movie.

I'M BACK GUYS!!! It's been a while! Sorry to my lovely readers that this took so long. My life has been kinda crazy. I love you all!! If you ever wanna chat my dms are open :)
