"Y/N, come on, Chris has been waiting downstairs for 20 minutes and if you're too much longer mum will get out the photo books"
My younger sister, Stephanie was stood leaning against my doorframe. All I was doing was perfecting my hair, I know it was only supposed to be a chilled night with the gang but I wanted to look good as Jason was going to be there.
"He's not going to care if your hair or curled or what, dodge"
That was definitely the voice of Chris beckoning me to hurry now, so I knew my time was nearly up.

Chris and I had been best friends since we were like 8 and even now we'd reached 17, there was nothing slowing us down from being best friends our whole lives. He gave me the nickname dodge. Mainly because I was a one man army when it came to dodgeball and the first time we played it in PE, the teacher commended me. I managed to outlive all the others. That was until the first time I was against Chris. I'd managed to take out the rest of his team but he still stood. I got cocky and thought I won, which didn't last long when he hit me square in the gut with a dodgeball and won. That's also how he got the nickname of roo short for Kangaroo as he would jump so high when dodging.

One of our mates, Alex, was holding a campfire and bbq party near Five Dock Bay so it wasn't too far from our houses in Drummoyne. The invites ranged from our usual squad to other additions. Alex and Chris' swimming buddy Jason was one of them. I'd visited the boys to watch them compete before and asked who he was. Alex cheekily introduced me to him, despite Chris' negative response to the idea, and I instantly liked him from then. He was kind and sweet and damn did he look good in some swimming trunks. Yet, myself and Jason weren't exactly friends friends, but I was hoping it would change at this party.

I came downstairs and I could already feel Chris' eyes scanning me up and down like a father would. My high waisted shorts and cropped top were pretty modest but I think my bestie just didn't like them because it wasn't often I wore such clothes.
"Are you bringing your plaid shirt?" He asked.
"Why?"
"I don't know 'case it gets cold"
This is Australia Chris, our cold is nothing compared to my cousins in Scotland.
"It's the outfit isn't it?" I raised an eyebrow at him.
Stephanie looked up from her phone, "it's nice and different for you too"
I think those were somewhat similar to Chris' thoughts.

No matter what he said, we had to leave or we'd be late. And he knows full well that I saw him grab my baggy plaid shirt from one of the kitchen chairs on the way out. The big brother mode has already kicked in. Though, the mood changed to a more relaxed one once we got the music on the CD player going.
'Heyyyy eh hey heyyy~'
"You still have this in your car?" I asked.
"Well it is your favourite"
I'd left my 5 seconds of summer CD in Chris' Jeep and kept forgetting to take it out. Despite the boy having a much better memory than me, he kept it in the car. So, every car journey we shared, which was a lot, were filled with my new favourite band.
I sung to my heart's content all the way through the first few songs on the album. We'd gotten up to 'Everything I Didn't Say' by the time we reached the site.

Alex, Grace, Louis and Hannah were already there when we arrived. That means there was only Jason and Max were left to come. Wooo pressure! Chris unloaded our sleeping bags and I carried in our cooler bag filled with pop and tinnies.
"Only the best cider for the best" I called out, all the attention turned to our arrival.
Alex and Louis were hopelessly trying to start a small campfire and Hannah was getting a metal shelf system in place for the bbq, meaning Grace was the only one who could really come hug us.
"They've been at it for 15 minutes" she whispered to me as I hugged her back. I smiled and peered over at the boys still struggling.
Once Chris had our things placed down, he went over to show them how to do it properly.

"I heard Jason is on his way as we speak" Grace teased. Without even needing to ask how she found that out, I knew my best friend was a blabber mouth to Alex and since Grace is Alex's girlfriend... you can put the pieces together.
"I just want to start out friends"
She scoffed at me, "Don't believe ya for one minute, and hey, next thing you know the two of you will be havin' a post-sex ciggie"
I pushed Grace slightly by her shoulder, "oi, don't say that"
Speak of the devil... "Jase! Good to see ya mate"
Alex had left Chris with the bbq and gone to greet the next arrival.

Jason had turned up with some grey shorts and a white tank top, it was as if he'd been sculptured by the Gods. His muscles were beautifully on show.
Grace lightly wiped my chin, "Drooling, definitely the first step of any friendship"
Was I really..? Shit!
He was getting closer and I just hoped he couldn't hear how loud my heart was beating.
Alex strode up to us with Jason in tow.
"The Mrs, Gracey.."
"Hi"
"Hey"
"And then you know Y/N"
"Hey"

I nervously raised my hand, muttering a "hello". Why did I have to be so formal when everyone else was so chill? The two walked off to greet the others and I could feel Grace's state at me, that, and maybe Chris' combined with hers.
"Step two of any good friendship, blushing"
Absentmindedly, I lightly dabbed my face - it was on fire. Great! It was one night with a bunch of friends and my crush... what could go wrong?
