William Fernsby was a skinny 14-year-old. He was standing in the middle of his school field having the snowfall from the sky and collect in his dirty blond hair. His blue eye stung as he thought once again of his uncle that he knew he would never see again. Two months ago his uncle, Jeff Fernsby was killed by robbers who, as he was told stole everything that his uncle had. The memory still brought him pain but his entire family told him to just move on.

He thought mom and dad were both very traditional parents. His mom had green eyes and blonde hair and his dad had brown hair and brown eyes. William's mom divorced his dad when he was 7 so he lived with stepdad jake. Williams never knew his grandparents and was told they died when he was very young. His cousin Harper had blonde hair and green eyes. She was one grade younger than him and always wore Black high tops with a maroon leather jacket and her signature ripped jeans. She was his cousin and lived with her dad, Robert. Because of this he only saw her about once a month. It became even harder to see Harper once she moved to Virginia and left him is Maine.

"Come on don't you want to play baseball with us," said his best friend Lucas Miller. Lucas had brown hair brown eyes and a face full of freckles. Lucas was not a troublemaker, but he never really followed the rules. Everyone knew Lucas hated his name as he would put it "It's just too simple." So, people started calling him "Mr. McFancyname" it was a big joke until he started going along with it "That's me" he would say happily.

Later that day William found himself doing what he has been doing unconsciously every day for the past two months, walking by his uncle's house which was only 4 streets away from his house, and looking through the window. But this time something seemed off. He pushed on the front door and to his surprise found that it was open. Warm air rushed out the front door into the cold world. William walked through the door and looked around. He took off his coat and walked around the house. Everything seemed exactly how it was when he was last inside his uncle's house before the robbers came. William put his coat back on and walked home. While he walked home, he thought about how nicely dusted everything looked. Is looked exactly like the last time he saw the house. But if that was true then what did the robbers steal; and why were the heaters and lights on?
