Upstate New York, December 5th 2000
In the dark, cold December night stands a beautiful three story white mansion. The mansion was situated upon a hill deep in the forest of upstate New York. The occupants of the house were engaged in various activities. Carlisle Cullen was in his study on the second floor, reading a new medical journal. His wife and mate, Esme Cullen, was sitting at the desk working on a new interior design project. Emmett Cullen and Jasper Hale were playing video games in the living room on the first floor. Edward and Alice Cullen were playing an interesting game of chess not too far from the couch where Emmett and Jasper were sitting completely engrossed in the video game. The last of the Cullen children, Rosalie Hale, was in their very spacious garage working on the many cars they have stored in there.
The family was so engrossed in their activities that none of them noticed the woman hiding in the trees, watching the family. In her arms she carried a large basket that holds two infants, newborns, wrapped in warm blankets with a note attached to it. As a wolf howl rang out in the storming night, the woman turned to look at the trees behind her before looking back at the house. Without wasting another second, she rushed up the stairs and onto the front porch, placing the basket down gently and knocking on the front door, ringing the doorbell for good measure. As footsteps neared the front door, the woman returned to her hiding spot in the trees and watched as Carlisle Cullen opened the door to see who it was that would come to their home. Seeing no one there, Carlisle turned to head back inside the house when one of the babies started to cry. Turning back, Carlisle looked around before his eyes finally landed on the basket the babies were in.
Acting quickly, Carlisle picked up the basket, looked around again to see if anyone was out there, and went into the house with the children. The woman smiled before turning back to the trees and shifting into her wolf to lead the others away. She knew what she did was very dangerous and would cost her her life, but with the knowledge that her children would be safe, protected, loved and well cared for, she welcomed her death when the pack finally caught up with her several states away from where she had left her children.
Meanwhile the Cullen household was in an uproar. After Carlisle brought the babies inside, the entire family met in the dining room wondering where the babies came from and who would leave them on the doorstep of the vampire family. Edward is the first to speak out about the children. "What are we going to do with them? We obviously can't keep them. They will be in constant danger around us and we risk exposure if we do keep them. The Volturi would surely end us all." says Edward as he looks around the room at his family. Rosalie is the next to speak. "What do you suggest we do Edward? Put them in the system? Let them bounce around from foster home to foster home? And who's to say that they'll be kept together in the foster system? They could be separated and abused! They could die in the system! Do you really suggest we let that happen!?" Rosalie raged at her brother. Emmett comes up behind his wife and wraps his arms around her in an attempt to keep her calm and from lunging across the room at Edward.
