chapter two

the silence thickened the already heavy air of pernicious as pebz chatted warmly with their shopkeeper, seeming to have forgotten the heated battle that was happening across the map between tessa and phoeney.

discarded clumps of wool lay scattered across the floor of the base, littering the purple soil. pebz fiddled with a piece stuck behind their ear, entangled in their light brown curls.

suddenly a resounding clatter echoed throughout the map and pebz jerked their head up in surprise, eyes darting around the small cave, looking to see if anyone had started to bridge over.

but something else caught pebz's eyes, the outline of phoeney cowering on the floor as tessa stood over him, sword in hand, pressing it to his throat.

pebz didn't have to be in hearing range to know that phoeney was begging for his life, unexpected terror filling his large, catlike eyes.

then tessa made a mistake, she faltered uncertainty, her eyes betraying a hint of compassion she was known for.

phoeney managed to push himself up and grabbing the sword from tessa's slackened hand he pushed her backwards, watching as she tumbled into the void, the setting sun reflecting off of her armour.

pebz tried to run forward, grabbing their blocks and not even thanking the shopkeeper as they positioned their wool, ready to go end the life of the boy who had killed tessa.

phoeney turned and started to run towards pebz, his sword swinging by his side and an evil glint in his dark eyes.

their eyes met and pebz felt a wave of anger, looking down to speed up the almost completed bridge.

but something caught their eye.

the void.

again.

they tried to look away but pebz already knew it was futile, their attraction to the endless expanse below them was too much to handle. they tried to look away but their eyes were involuntarily flicked back.

pebz swore to themself, eyes clouding at the thought of losing this game but their love was far more important.

below them the void glittered gently, beautiful in all it's glory.

'i'm coming.'

pebz shut their eyes and jumped, entangling themself in the neverending euphoria of love
