They're sitting in the back of Patrick's van, looking at the sporadically dotted freckle-stars in the navy expanse of sky.
Pete kisses Mikey clumsily as he hums, feather-light kisses along his jaw and neck. 'Mikeyway,' he murmures, over and over again. 'Mikeyway. I love you.' He whispers it, a soft, cautious breath, phrased like a question, and he giggles immediately after. 'I love you. I love you, I love you.' He says it over and over again, and he's not quite sure why, but reasons are for the hesitant, and Pete was one impulsive person.
Mikey just hums, mellow and peaceful, and it's nice. It's nice, Pete thinks. He knows that this is fine, this moment is perfectly fine, and he wants it to be a Forever Moment. 'I'm going to marry you.' He declares, sure and certain. Mikey stops humming to laugh a little, and Pete huffs indignantly. 'I am. I-' He stops abruptly, getting off of Mikey and getting on his knee in front of Mikey, fiddling in his pockets and lighting up when he gets out a ring pop. He unwraps the ring pop and held it in his hands, looking at Mikey. 'Michael James Way. Will you marry me?'
Mikey stares at him, wide-eyed and incredulous. 'Pete,' He murmurs, 'You are going to be the death of me.' And he really was, because Mikey was in love with a kindergartner, oh god. But he's smiling, a small bashful grin ghosting his pale lips. Pete grins in triumph, and slides the ring pop onto Mikey's left ring finger.
'I- I do really want to marry you, though.' He says seriously, sitting cross-legged, wringing his hands and twiddling his thumbs. nervously. 'I do. I really do.'
Mikey glows red against his pale cheeks, feeling warm all over. 'We're sixteen.' He mumbles.
'I know. But I really love you.'
'For how long? What if this is just a fling? What if you stop feeling this? What if this was just a joke-'
Pete huffs, dropping his head onto Mikey's chest. 'I'm in love with an idiot, my god.'
'What?' Mikey says, baffled.
'Calm down, Mikeyway. This isn't a joke. I love you. I love this. This feeling. This routine. This everything. Even we don't last forever, I'll have never regretted it. Promise.' Pete reassures, holding out his pinky finger to Mikey.
He smiles a little. 'Pinky promise.' He whispers, and joins fingers with Pete.
'Exactly. We can be always if you want to. We can make this an infinity, even if it's only for a few months. Little infinities.'
'Look at you, quoting Fault in Our Stars.'
'I can quote Bob Ross too.' Pete grins, 'We can be happy little accidents. This is never a mistake.'
'Oh my god.' Mikey giggles, shaking his head and kissing Pete.
And yeah, Pete's certain now; this is a Forever Moment.
