In the year 2021, the Philippines is a vibrant constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia. After successfully gaining its independence from Spain in 1898, Andres Bonifacio became the first ruler of the fledgling kingdom. Andres son, who married the daughter of the much-revered icon Jose Rizal, succeeded the throne and instituted democratic reforms, making the Philippines the first constitutional monarchy in Asia.
Through a royal edict issued by the first king, His Majesty Andres of House Bonifacio, the most prominent families of the Spanish-era provinces were given ducal titles, while Spanish-era cities and towns were made as earl-ships.
The royal family has now ruled the Philippines for 123 years as the symbol of the state and in a ceremonial capacity. King Alfonso of House Bonifacio is the current monarch and is married to Queen Chalermwan, the second daughter of the king of Thailand. The marriage is a love match, which has now become common for royalties in the 21st century.
At present, the Philippines has led the Southeast Asian region in various human development indices, including human rights and equality. Following Spain, its former mother country's legalization of same-sex marriage in 2005, the Philippine parliament passed a new law granting marriage equality in the kingdom in 2006, the first in the entire Asian continent.
