pens.

one day in class, i was doodling on my paper as usual when ms.barns came storming into class late as usual. she hurried to put down her stuff and cried out "get your homework out so i may collect it!" i fumbled in my folder for it and put it down on my desk, as she marched around with a few cries of "no homework? then it's LATE!"

when she came around to my desk she snatched it off and continued down the row to little annie perkins's desk. i kept on minding my own business. until ms.barns screeched "MISTER LENNER! WHY is your homework in PEN when I SPECIFICALLY ASKED for you to write it in pencil? HMM?" she stared him down with her beady eyes. "Well, I don't own any pencils."

ms.barns gave a loud exasperated sigh. "WELL, then WHY don't you own any pencils," ms.barns said, trying to contain her anger. by now the entire class was giggling at jack, to which i mentally shamed them, because even though i hadn't met him yet, it's not nice to laugh. "PENCILS, were on the school shopping list WERE THEY NOT?" ms.barns said with a red face.

"yes ms.barns, they were. but I prefer not to partake in the consumerism of the pencil industry. i just prefer writing with pens. there's just a certain...permanence to pens. to the way if you write something, you can't take it back. even if you scribble over it, it's still there underneath. and with pens, you can find yours. you can find the pen that you know was made specifically for you to spill ink out of, while with pencils, it's just...a pencils. and you have to sharpen pencils."jack responded calmly.

the class had gone silent. i had stopped doodling and started staring sharply at the boy who was named jack. the one with the perfect hair that was just long enough to flip, but not long enough to be a mullet. after a long silence ms.barns finally replied, lip quivering "and do you think...that this class...depends...on WHAT YOU PREFER WRITING WITH?' and before he was able to give a wise-ass response she snatched his paper and in return gave him another, with the words that clearly read "DETENTION."
