4. Never a follower

There was silence and to Caroline it seemed like it lasted decades. The words she heard were echoing in her head.

"I-I've never seen anything like this. There's such talent, bravery, knowledge, strength and power... Gifted indeed. Even some incredible and undiscovered potential"

Whispers filled the room as everyone was still trying to figure out what was happening.

After a few seconds without saying anything, the hat kept speaking what was capable of shocking even the emotionless man once beside her.

"I can't sort her. It seems unfair considering the perfect balance between all of her qualities. I believe she belongs to all of the houses"

Students couldn't keep their eyes of what was happening and were making a bigger fuss now. Startled, Dumbledore stood up.

"Allright Allright ! Everybody calm down this situation will later be discussed privately and the decision eventually announced. Now dinner may begin!"

Caroline still had no reaction. What in the hell had happened? Being new in the midle of the third year was already outsanding enough and now she had to deal with being the weirdo aswell.

"You can go seat next to your dad again dear" said McGonagall, seeing her worried face. Caroline simply nodded and went back to the teacher's table while looking at her dad.

His expression showed worry but it changed to a proud smile after noticing that he was being observed. Even if she thought it was odd, Caroline ended up brushing that feeling away.

They wouldn't talk about this whole situation before her meeting with Dumbledore. She knew that.

What would happen now? A million thoughts running through her head as she noticed the vampire looking man once again was staring.

"It's great to see you again, Severus" said Lupin smirking. Severus answered with an up and down look and with a slight squint in his eyes.

"The feeling is mutual" Caroline could sense the irony which she didn't quite enjoy.

"So you know each other?" "Yes we do" told her Remus.

"Like father, like daughter. Both quite different aren't you?" She was now the one to look at him but with boldness in her eyes.

"I've always believed it is better to be different than being like everyone else. I mean what's the fun in that after all?" She knew what Severus meant and she started to understand why she had never heard of him.

Her father put an assuring hand on her shoulder "Each self with their ideas i guess. I hope you not just talk and can show us all your talent in potions class, Miss Lupin"

"I'll be pleased to, professor..." "Snape"

The time had come. Dinner was over and everyone was heading to their dorms.

Caroline hadn't been able to talk with her friends. She hoped by now they would be reunited and that she would aswell be getting to know her new dorm. But no. She had no ideia what would happen next which got her anxious.

In Dumbledore's office once again, the shock was once again the main character. It was becoming to much to Caroline even though the unending disbelief was becoming monotonous.

"Oh dear, you've exceed any expectations I had! I knew from the very start you were special but such thing as being unsortable i have never seen. Don't take it as a bad thing tho. I find it quite exciting"

Dumbledore paused, while walking around. "You know I was thinking during dinner what to do about this situation and I think I've found a solution. Let's suppose you really could be in all houses. What do think about it? I believe we could work it out and that it would only bring benefits to you."

" I have no ideia. I mean I'm honored but I feel like it would be a bit overwhelming. How would it even function ?"

"Well you would pick whatever classes you wish and you'd have access to all common rooms"

"What about my dorm?"

"You will have a dorm in each or you can choose one"

"Are you sure? It looks like I'm privileged"

"If you wish so, you can pick a house aswell, but I consider it to be more wise if you experimented before discarding the opportunity"

Caroline nodded and soon she was again in the hallways next to her dad filling him in.

Dumbledore had given her the night to choose and she would spend that time in the gryfindor common room.

"Look, I know it seems like a lot right now but I know you'll do great and i hope you realize how proud I am Caroline. It won't be easy but your old man is here if you need me"

Lupin said it while smiling. She always felt comforted by her dad's words. Still, she was saturated. It was only the first day at Hogwarts and so much had happened already.

Caroline only wanted to meet people and feel integrated but once again she is the odd one out.
