"Hi mom." I say into the phone. Come to think of it, she never even came home last night. Which actually hurts me.
"Hi Mads. You okay?"
"Yeah. Why wouldn't I be?" I ask sarcastically. I feel bad for being like this but she knows exactly why.
"Maddy please don't be like this. You knew I would meet someone sooner or later. I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner-"
"Wait, sooner? Y-You mean this has been going on for a while now?" I hesitantly ask, making my way out of the living room where Harry is seated. I don't want him to see me cry. Even though he has.
The line is silent.. to the point where I thought she wasn't there anymore. "Mom, answer me." I plead, tears brimming my eyes.
"Yes, Maddy." She answers as I feel a tear slide across my cheek. "For about three months."
Shit.
"Three months?!" I cover my mouth with my hand in shock as I reach the backdoor. I run out into the cold breeze, sitting on a nearby bench. I remember the day we got this ugly bench. It was a day I won't ever forget..
((FLASHBACK))
"Mommmyy.." I nagged, pulling at the hems of her dress. "please tell me where we're going!! Daddy won't."
She laughs, picking me up. "No, sweetie. It's a surprise."
I was about 6 years old. Those were the days, wasn't it? No school problems, no "yucky boy", as I used to call it, problems. The only hard thing in life at that stage, was deciding which doll you wanted to be.
"Surprises shmizes!" I pouted, looking my mommy straight in the eyes. "I don't like surprises."
"Yes you do! Don't lie to me, Mads. I know you too well." She laughs, walking with me to the car. As she carefully placed me on the car seat, I turned to the only man in my life at that time.
"Please tell me daddy." I ask tapping him on the shoulder, as he was focused on the car stereo.
He turned to face me, grinning from ear to ear. "You'll have to wait and see."
.....
"We're here!" Daddy practically sang as we drove into a huge gate. My eyes widen as I see the all too familiar dogs running towards the car.
"Grammy's house!" I yelled, jumping up and down on the back seats. I always loved going to Grammy. I remember always- and I mean always- running to her or calling her whenever mommy yelled at me for being naughty. She was my best friend and I loved her to death.
.....
"I think you should have this, my love." Grammy said, pointing to an incredibly ugly bench. "My mommy gave this to me, and now Grammy is giving it to you."
"Oh Grammy! Thank you so much. Mommy can we take it home?" I ask, turning to her.
"If Grammy gave it to you, you can take it sweetie." Daddy said, mommy glancing at him.
That night I remember hiding under my bed, because of all the screaming coming out of mommy and daddy's room, as I cried myself asleep.
((FLASHBACK ENDS))
I felt the tears now streaming down my face as I try to stop them. I can't. It's too much for me.
"I'm sorry Maddy. I know how much your dad meant to-"
"No, you clearly don't. Mom, you can't possibly-" I sobbed, taking a deep breath before going on. "Just leave it. I'll tell Harry that the dinner tonight is cancelled as well."
"You don't have to do that, Maddy."
"It's fine. He's leaving tomorrow anyway." I felt my heart sink at the thought.
"What? He's leaving? Maddy I'm sorry. I thought you two were together?"
"No, no.." a little laugh escapes. "We're not. I don't even think he likes me in that way."
"Oh.. why did he go through all that trouble then? He clearly likes you, Mads. I saw the way he looked at you."
I feel my cheeks flush as I lightly giggle. What's going on with me?
"It doesn't matter.. He's going away tomorrow." I say, more to myself than my mother. "Well, I have to go. Goodbye mom. I love you."
"Love you too, Mads."
I've learned to always tell the people you love that you love them. You never know when it might be the last time...
I disconnect the call, suddenly feeling very uncomfortable.. In a good way though.
Looking down, I don't even have to actually know who or what it is.
"Harry?" I ask.
"Mm.." He mumbles as I look up, seeing him lean in the doorway with his arms crossed across his chest.
"Were you spying on me?" I raise my brow playfully. (With a hint of seriousness, though.)
"Course not." He laughs, exposing his dimples. I could feel my stomach doing flips at the sight. "May I join you?"
"Yep."
"Can I ask you something?" He says as he takes a seat next to me. "You know, something personal?"
"Oh no. Are you going to ask me if I'm a virgin? Should've seen this coming." I chuckle, in attempt to make a joke.
He lightly laughs, shaking his head. "No. I was going to ask you.." He hesitates for a moment. "..what the nightmares are about?"
I gulp, my throat suddenly dry. "I.. uh.. don't want to talk about it just yet."
He nods, taking me hand. "Just know I'm here for you, okay?"
....
After Harry went home, the rest of my night consisted of eating popcorn and watching old episodes of 'How Do I Look?'. One of my favorite shows.
My phone suddenly began to vibrate as I jump across the room to the table.
What? Can't a girl be excited to maybe get a text from Harry Styles?
Harry: *I almost forgot.. do you want to get breakfast tomorrow before I leave? If you don't, that's fine. x H*
I smile as my fingers type across the keyboard.
Maddy: *Of course. Is 8 am okay?*
Harry: *Perfect. See you tomorrow. xx*
Maddy: *Goodnight Harry.*
Harry: *Goodnight Madison.*
