Gwendolyn was usually happy to get on the subway at the end of the day, but today felt off.
It wasn't a describable off-ness. Gwen tried to pinpoint it, but she couldn't figure it out. It was Friday, a wonderful day. She has protection with her, New York isn't the safest. Work has been fairly light recently. So what was it?
She didn't know, and tried not to worry herself over it too much, because surely it will pass.
The subway stopped to let people off while others got on, and she was still trying to focus on other things. She even began reading her book, that she keeps with her for emergencies, to distract her.
Most people got off at that stop, and usually no one would get on. Gwen lived pretty far away from her work, and worked rather late, so she usually got the last part of her commute to herself. Tonight, however, one man stumbled into her subway car.
At first, she didn't give him a second glance, because he was just some random drunk guy, who actually managed to get to a the subway station on his own. She continued to try to read her book until he let out a grunt.
It wasn't a grunt you would hear from someone in their sleep, this was an 'I'm in pain' type grunt. The first time she heard it, she just brushed it off, thinking she imagined it.
Then it happened again. Now she knew she wasn't imagining it, but it could've been a fluke. So she waited for a third grunt. After a bit of waiting, she heard nothing so she went back to reading.
Suddenly, she heard a hiss of pain. Her head snapped up and she gasped. For the first time since he got in the car, she actually looked at the man. He was in a nice suit, but it was torn and had a few scattered holes. He also had a white button up, that was beginning to look red near the rips in his suit.
He had medium length black hair that was matted to his head by, what Gwen hopes to be, sweat. The mystery man also has a small gash on his cheek along with a few other nicks on his face. His knuckles were busted and there was a small puddle of blood pooling under his left leg.
Gwen has had her fair share of helping people. She normally helps the homeless people on her way back from work, so she's pretty good with injuries, but he looked worse than the sprained wrists and bruises she is used to.
"Uh, excuse me Mister, would you like some help? I have antibiotic creams and band-aids in my purse." Gwen kindly offers.
"Oh. No... I think I'm good." His voice took her by surprise. It was thick and deep, not like honey because that is too light, it was more like the sap from a dark, twisted, tree before it crystallizes into amber.
"Well, uh... You look like you're pretty beaten up, and you keep grunting. Are you sure you don't want help?" She offers again.
"Ah, I'm fine, really. Just... don't help. I'm on my way to a hospital now," He explains.
"Ah okay. Just know my offer still stands." She flashes him a smile as he nods while applying pressure to his shoulder.
Gwen knew there was no hospital at the next stop. She also knew he wasn't going to accept her help knowingly. So she devised a plan.

The train slowly pulled to a stop and the doors opened. The two lone passengers got out and went their separate ways. Or so it seemed.
As the man stumbled around the streets of New York, Gwen followed in the shadows. It wasn't in her nature to let him go somewhere he may not get the proper help.
