Chapter 3: The Family Business 

NEWSPAPER OFFICE.

Cassie makes two mugs of tea and takes them over to where Dean sits at a computer.

Cassie: Here.

Dean: Thanks. I'm trying to find a link between those killings back in the '60s and what's going on now. There wasn't a lot about it in the paper.

Cassie: Not surprising. Probably minimal police-work too. Back then equal justice under the law wasn't too literal around here.

Dean's phone rings.

Dean: Yeah.

Sam: (On phone) Ok, the courthouse records show that Mr and Mrs Mayor bought an abandoned property. The previous owner was the Dorian family for, like, 150 years.

Dean: Dorian?

Sam: Yeah.

Dean: (To Cassie) Didn't you say the Dorian family used to own this paper?

Cassie: (Nodding) Along with everything else around here. Real pillars of the town.

Dean: Right, right.

Dean clicked a few links on the computer.

Dean: That's interesting.
Sam: What?

Dean: This Cyrus Dorian. He vanished in April of '63.The case was investigated but never solved. It was right around the time the string of murders was going on back then.

Sam: Well I pulled a bunch of papers up on the Dorian place, it must have been in bad shape when the Mayor bought it.

Dean: Why's that?

Sam: The first thing he did was bulldoze the place.

Dean: (to Cassie) Mayor Todd knocked down Dorian's place?

Cassie: It was a big deal. One of the oldest houses left. He made the front page.

Dean: (to Sam) You got a date?

Sam: Ahhh. The 3rd of last month.

Dean: (clicking, then reading from a computer screen) Mayor Todd bulldozed the Dorian family home on the 3rd. The first killing was the very next day.

Later that night at Cassie's House.

Cassie was watching a movie with her daughter close to her arms, almost half asleep. Cassie noticed flickering lights and she heard a truck engine coming from outside.

Ava: mommy... what's that noise

Cassie: shh sweetie everything going be fine relax, I'm going to check where it's coming from

Cassie gets up.

Ava: mommy don't go! I wanna go with you

Cassie: alright, but stay close to me okay

Ava pulled her hand out wanting to be lifted, Cassie picked up and slowly made her way towards the window. She gasped when she saw the big trunk and quickly shielded the window.

Ava: Mommy, what was that?!

Cassie: shh baby everything is going to be okay.

As the truck tried to make its way through the house scaring both Cassie and Ava, Ava started crying because the noise was scaring her as Cassie held onto her and quickly dial Dean's number.
