Reilin #2

Disclaimer: I do not own the Spirit Animals Series.

This takes place in Fall of the Beasts, Book 5, Heart of the Land, when the Four were at the Citadel, and Meilin and Rollan were waiting for Essix to go into passive state while Abeke and Conor were being escorted to their rooms first.

"How long do you think this is gonna take?" Meilin said to Rollan as she watched the retreating backs of Abeke and Conor as they entered the Citadel.

"With Essix, you never know. She's as unpredictable as the freaking weather here," he joked, trying to lighten up the heavy atmosphere caused by the ominous glares of the guards.

Glancing nervously at the remaining Oathbound, Meilin leaned close to Rollan as she spoke out a worry nagging at her brain long ago. "How do you think is Conor doing? I suspect this meeting's got something to do with the Wyrm, and we all know how hard his actions took a toll on his mind," she spoke in a soft voice. If her suspicions were correct, the Greencloaks couldn't afford to show any sense of weakness now, especially the Four Fallen.

"Conor's gonna be fine. He's strong, and if anything happens, we will be here for him, no matter what," was Rollan's confident reply.

They both looked up at the same time as Essix let out a long, lazy call from afar and continued to glide in relaxed circles near the mountain peaks, not caring about anything that's happening below. Meilin, too, wished that she could fly up, up high and leave all her problems and stress on the ground.

"Why did I sign up for this?" she couldn't help letting out a sigh of exasperation as Essix drifted through another lazy circle.

Rollan, however, grinned cheekily and energetically at her. "Since when did I get such a pessimist for a girlfriend?!" her said teasingly.

"Since the day I shot you my practiced shy smile," Meilin shot back. "Oh, how it was the perfect definition for 'love at first sight'," she mocked, rolling her eyes.

"Seriously, that's all we're going to tell our kids of how Mommy and Daddy first met?" Rollan retorted. "It should contain more drama."

"Oh, yes. How Daddy had hearts in his eyes when he first saw Mom. And no, how in Erdas are we going to have kids if your not even my boyfriend?!" Meilin said sarcastically.

"But you are my girlfriend, and deny all you want, I know you love me, my Lady Panda."

"Pffftt," Meilin turned away with a beet red face.

Rollan took one final glance at the dot of Essix in the sky above, then turned to Meilin with stars in his eyes, like a puppy waiting for a treat. "Since Essix isn't going to come down any sooner, how about you teach me that move you did and we could spar for a bit?" he pleaded.

Meilin smiled a close-eyed smile at the boy. "You? Spar with me? Nonsense! I'm definitely going to kick your butt."

"We can try…"

"In your dreams!"

Suddenly, Meilin felt a cool swoosh of air near her head, and she swiftly ducked with a counterpunch to the enemy's side, only to find a wheezing Rollan clutching his stomach painfully and gripping his dagger as she stood up with alert senses in a battle stance.

"Bad move," she concluded calmly. "You shouldn't have attacked me so rashly while I'm on high alert. You asked for this, I will definitely kick your butt. Or," she added, putting her index finger to her chin, "you can always forfeit."

Rollan grinned a grin that showed all of his teeth at once. "I never forfeit!" he declared. "Or do you think I don't have the guts to take you on, Your Highness," he mock-bowed.

Bad move x 2, Meilin thought, as she whipped out her staff and swung it powerfully toward Rollan, who was still bowing. The startled boy looked up only to find a staff of Meilin's mockery nearing his throbbing side.

With practiced reflexes, Rollan dodged the blow with lighting speed, thankfully, and slashed his dagger in Meilin's face immediately after.

However, as expected, Meilin ducked and kicked at Rollan's knees with supreme precision and speed. It seemed, through the eyes of the poor startled guards of the Citadel, that the two were an even match as their overwhelmed eyes followed Rollan's movements. He quickly moved his legs out of reach of Meilin and did a cartwheel, ending up three meters away from her.

And all tension and excitement rose to the breaking point as Meilin ran forward, preparing to deliver a blow to Rollan's neck, sure to knock him out if it connected solidly. Somehow, Rollan's brain stupidly directed him to step to the left with inhuman speed, and the climax of the battle reached its peak as Rollan, perhaps hoping to imitate Meilin, let out a sounding-strangled-battle-cry. Then he threw his dagger in the air and surged forward to meet Meilin's staff. Meilin had stopped completely in her tracks, staring with wide, horrified eyes at Rollan, as his dagger curved down, completely missing its target. Rollan, however, was completely oblivious to his mistake, as his left hand reached out to punch Meilin, who dodged, the other hand reaching for the dagger. Rollan's eyes widened in horror only when his fingers grasped empty air, and Meilin could literally see the trajectory of the dagger's blade as it sliced through the air, aiming right where Rollan's palm is going to be. Meilin felt like this was the fastest she's ever moved as she dived under Rollan's hand and sped toward the knife, grasping it an inch from Rollan's hand.

Time stopped.

Silence broken only when Meilin kicked Rollan's butt hard in anger and worry.

"How can you just try that move?! Did you know HOW MUCH TIME IT COST ME TO PERFECT THAT MOVE?! THAT WAS UTTER STUPIDITY! YOU CAN'T JUST DO THAT IN THE MIDDLE OF A SPAR!" she screamed, dropping the dagger. Rollan could only watch on in fear and a little bit amazement. "Never do that again!" she said angrily, panting as her oxygen ran out.

"Yes, ma'am," Rollan said meekly, staring at the ground.

Both of them looked up the see Essix diving down in a steep arc, aiming for Rollan's chest, who quickly loosened it and Essix vanished into it with a bright flash almost immediately.

Meilin laughed, her anger evaporated all of a sudden. "She thinks you got roasted enough. C'mon, let get back to those two. They are so going to hear about this."

"Hey!" Rollan could only yell in indignation as they started toward the terrified Oathbound guards at the doorway.

This was my first time writing a fighting scene, what do you think?
