CHAPTER 1

 Just an Apple

Twelve years later…

“Master!!” she ran to him.

“Shi - hyeon! You are late.” He was already starting their training.

She smiled at Dong-Min, who was already there. He looked at her straight in the eye and looked away. She had always loved Dong-Min. But because of “the incident” the master never looked at him anymore. And since that day, Dong-Min never smiled at her anymore. The reason she was late was because she thought they could talk something out. But she saw that he was only scolding him again. She sighed and took her wooden sword. She took her stance and pared with Dong-Min. From the way it looked, they had equal strength. A kick from the right, she blocked it. But she had far greater knowledge than him. After she had been found by Kang-dae, she was raised up. At the early age of three, she already had her own mind. She studied everything by herself. Only learning with her eyes. The way Kang-dae would fight the local rebels, the medicinal herbs, and everything he was teaching Dong-Min at that age. Or maybe more than that. She barely listens to his lectures since she already knew what he was teaching.

“That’s enough for today.” Kang-dae said.

Dong-Min was catching his breath and looked at Shi – hyeon, who was barely exhausted but acted exhausted. Also “trying to catch her breath” she laughed.

“That was great! Did you have fun too, Dong-Min?” she smiled at him again. He grinned and laughed. She was so flustered that for the first time since their childhood he smiled at her.

“Why are you laughing?” she muttered. He smiled at her again.

“What a stupid girl.” he said under his breath. Kang-dae came to her and looked at Bidam.

“You’re free to go anywhere. Let’s meet here again later.” She shook her head and smiled sadly at him.

She walked through the meadow which she always stayed for a rest. She ran to the big pine tree where she’s always at peace. To her, it felt like she was being protected, like it would always have her back. She always stayed there until the night and looks at the stars and studies them. She lied down the grass and gazed at the stars and had forgotten all her worries. A cat was actually nearby and licked her hand. It tickled her so she sat up. She smiled at it and patted it.

“You must be lonely.” She said to it. She smiled again.

“Sorry, but I have no food to give you little cat.” She stood up and inhaled and exhaled.

She skipped back to the road and headed back to their meeting place. But since she had a little bit more time, she took the long way there. But she paused for a while and peeped at a scene near the market place. A merchant was chasing a boy almost the same age as her, shouting to give back an apple. What simple thing do you have to chase a kid for? She thought. She balanced a rock on her foot and kicked it directly to the merchant’s leg. She hit it! The merchant tripped and fell. And then, the boy stopped and looked at her direction and saw her. She grinned widely at him. He just smirked and ran away. The merchant finally regained his composure and tried to stand up. Oops. She had to run away now. She quickly went to their meeting point. This time, she wasn’t late. Dong-Min was being scolded again. He was being hit by a stick by Kang-dae. She didn’t like the scene so she made her presence obvious. She took her wooden sword and purposely bumped the stand.

“Forgive me. I’m always clumsy. Let me fix this.”

She picked up one sword after another and lifted the stand and put it back. So Kang-dae hit Dong-Min and gestured to help her. She saw them so she quickly looked back at what she was fixing. Dong-Min quickly ran to her and grabbed the wooden sword she was currently holding, while glaring angrily at her. She sighed and continued her work.
