CHAPTER 3

The Princess’ Tales

ß-SHI-HYEON-à

I’m in horrible trouble. I didn’t go back before the sun had set. This is the first time I ever EVER disobeyed Master Kang-Dae’s orders. Luckily, I managed to collect a few from the mountains. And I even found these two. I was running back to the village and it was still in a bad condition. The people were still coughing and crying. I ran to the inn where we were staying and master was there along with a kneeling Dong-Min.

“Master! I’m truly sorry for being late.” I bowed. “If it’s okay to still give this to you.” I offered him the bag with only four wild ginger roots.

“Look at this girl, she was able to give me at least FOUR and you give me none!” He roared in anger.

“Master, it is not his entire fault. It’s almost impossible to find these in the mountains and I was just very lucky to have found them!” I said to calm Master down.

“Be quiet, Shi-Hyeon. I may not be furious about that now but this boy has more offenses than you know!”

“Master, I’m sure it’s not that immoral.” I looked at Dong-Min; he was sneering at me as if he told me, See? You’re ALWAYS the good girl. I cleared my throat.

“Do you smell his breath? It has the stench of meat. IT IS NOT THE TIME FOR COMFORT WHEN PEOPLE ARE DYING! DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THAT, MY FOOLISH NOVICE?” He turned back to Dong-Min.

I left Haneul and In-Su at the door so I had to get back to them.

“Please excuse me.” I bowed and left Master and Dong-Min. I saw the two outside and they were sitting by the wooden stairs. As soon as they saw me they stood up and looked at me in stern faces.

I took out a small pin with small and lovely blue flowers on it. “Master is currently a little busy with Dong-Min. Meanwhile, I should show my quarters to Haneul for her to sleep in. In-Su, once master comes out, I want you to present this to him. And once you have done this, tell him to give you a place to rest. Tell him I told him to.”

“You’re telling your master what to do?” In-Su said grasping my pin and playing with it in his fingers.

“Sometimes, I do. And may I remind you that this pin is very special to me. May I assure its safety in your hands?” In-Su nodded.

I left him with it. I was feeling doubtful. I did not want to leave it. I pulled Haneul with me and she was oddly clumsy. She kept on stumbling while I was dragging her to my room.

“Here you go, Princess. This is your room for the moment.” She stares daggers at me. I chuckled and sat next to her.

“Do you not like being called a princess? After all, it is every girl in the world wants to be one.” I softly said.

“I honestly do not agree with you. Do you know what the duties of being the princess are? It means you have to do paper work, look beautiful, and lastly avoid assassinations. Do you think that’s a good thing?” she retorted.

“Hmm… I do know. But all the more I want to be a princess. I think it’s a great honor to serve your country. We have travelled around the country and I’ve seen many great things and I have also seen objects that need improvement. And all these years we’ve been travelling, I have been devising proposals for further development of the country.”

Haneul smiled at me. Although this was my first time seeing her smile, I felt shy. She was undoubtedly a beauty.

“You are a smart child, Shi-Hyeon. May I ask? Where did you get these plans from?”
