"Is this thing on? Rin asked her younger brother Luca, who had just finished setting up her late mother's 2005 camcorder.

"Yeah, it is." Luca quickly replied.

Rin was sitting on the edge of her twin-sized bed, golden hour had hit not long ago, sending sunshine streaks through her open window. "Hi....uh my name is Rin. I'm 15, about to turn 16 in June, and I would love to be chosen to be on Total Drama Island." Rin quickly looked over at her brother for some reassurance. He nodded his head and smiled, giving a thumbs up. "I am a social butterfly and can make friends very fast. I'd be a great asset in team activities. If I won the money, I'd move to New York City to pursue acting. Thank you for looking at my audition!"

As Nate shut off the camcorder, their father barged into the room, the stench of alcohol wafted in with him. He'd been drinking again. "What are you two doing? Nothing useful." He grumbled.

"I'm auditioning to be on a reality show," Rin answered.

Her father let out a venomous laugh " You'll never get picked. Youre ugly and worthless. Do something useful and clean up the kitchen. It's all you'll ever be good for."

After successfully crushing Rin's spirit, he promptly left the room, slamming the door behind him.

He was nice once before Rin's mother died. He was happy once, but losing your high school sweetheart to cancer isn't easy. Now he was mean, especially to Rin, who was a carbon copy of her mother.

"You'll get in sis," Luca said, wrapping a comforting arm over his sister's shoulders.

"Hopefully."
