The first time I watched this movie was.. almost 10 years ago, back when it premiered on Disney channel. I did not see the entire movie, only bits and pieces here and there, too busy arguing with my brother over the TV remote. Fun times.
Years later, when I found the movie online, along with every other Ghibli movie, so of course, I watched it again (and also every other Ghibli movie eheheheh). For the first time I understood what it was about, and it became my top 5 favorite Ghibli movies.
There's just something magical and beautiful about it. The world so fleshed out it felt real, enhanced with the story which ends with that ghibli-esque bittersweet feeling. The feeling that keeps you longing and wondering 'what happens next?' but also know deep down that the story ends there.
