"𝐒𝐇𝐄'𝐒 𝐀𝐋𝐖𝐀𝐘𝐒 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆.   that's the problem. there's always a bigger, indecipherable plan in place, and there's always an ulterior motive." sighing, paul hugged the box of kittens closer to his chest and laid his leather-covered arms over its sides.

george watched dutifully from the center of ivy's small kitchen while paul peered into the cardboard box, gently petting a cat's head with the tip of his first finger. "i doubt she means it," george offered on ivy's behalf, though his doubts had little to do with her- ivy was the strangest girl any of them had ever met, and george couldn't begin to imagine what went on in her head.

paul scoffed, his eyes moving around the sparsely-decorated room as he absentmindedly scratched a second kitten's belly. "i don't see how she couldn't mean it, you know, how couldn't she mean to have an ulterior motive? i mean, i still haven't got a clue how i'm going to tell my father we've adopted five whole cats!"

george stifled a laugh, the sharp points of his teeth shining in what little natural light the kitchen was offering. "no, you still haven't told him?" he echoed, featuring a faint smile. this would be a record for paul, being grounded three times in only one month. maybe paul was right, and maybe ivy did mean everything she'd been doing- and to george, that was the funniest thought of all, that ivy was intentionally grounding paul for the majority of the summer.

"i'd take care of him for you," a girl's voice sounded suddenly from over paul's shoulder, to which george and paul both screamed. shamelessly snickering, ivy surfaced in their line of sight, dress riding up as she pulled herself to sit on the kitchen's counter, directly between them. "but that's probably just part of my indecipherable plan."

paul flicked her exposed thigh and set the box of kittens down on the counter, eyeing the appearance of her maniacal giggling. "eavesdropping, really?" ivy thought of arguing that her doing so was his own fault, for coming to talk badly about her in the place she lived.

instead, she smiled down into the box and held up one of the little kittens. "of course! eavesdropping is my third favorite hobby, after books and boys." paul rolled his eyes in the way he always seemed to while ivy moved the kitten's arms in a dancing motion. she knew it didn't matter much to paul, but she hoped to name them soon; with the summer's ending, paul and ivy hadn't found the time.

george leaned forward, amused with ivy's motherly sort of actions. and changing the subject, he pointed to her head, "i heard about what paul did, how are you feeling?"
