I was running down the street with the boys shirt still bunched up in my hand. I scanned the street for a place to hide. I saw an alley way coming up so I turned down that. I ran to the fire escape ladder and started to climb up. Thankfully, the boy followed. When we got to the first level I pointed to the ground as a signal to lay down. Again, he obeyed and lay flat on his belly. We lay there in silence for what seemed the longest time. Then we heard footsteps. A gang member was walking down the alley. We both held our breaths until he walked away. Then we stay there in silence until nightfall.
We climbed down the ladder. Once we were on the ground I said, "We should spend the night here. Make a makeshift bed out of the trash bags. I'm Jade, by the way." He nodded and mumbled, "Liam" He sat down. "don't you have any belongings?" I asked. He nodded. "where are they?" he pulled out a small bag. "can I see?" In the bag was a necklace, a Swiss army knife, and a dog tag. I pulled out the dog tag and looked at it. Engraved on it was the name Lee Jonson. "was this your dads?" I asked. Liam nodded. I put everything back in the bag and handed it back to him. "we should get some sleep. We have to go get supplies tomorrow" Then we both lay down for the night.
