"Rennin calm down and- no Rennin stop pacing!" Jennifer Whitley sat perched on the small sofa in Rennin Whitley's dressing room.
"I am calm. I'm just worried, I go on stage in six minutes and the doctor still hasn't called."
Rennin paced the floor once more, before the sound of Sweet Child of Mine splintered the silence.
"Hello? Yes, this is she. Okay, yes-, I see. Two weeks then? Perfect. Thank you doctor."
With a sickening feeling within her stomach, Rennin sank to the floor and held her pale face in her hands.
"Darling, what did the doctor say?" Jennifer pushed her daughters racking sobs to become coherent, oblivious to the heavy-hung situation.
"M-mom, it's back."
And with three simple words, the strong independent woman's face well. They had always known it would come back, it was inevitable, but everything was going so well.
After several moments of silence, with the exception of Rennin's sobs, Jennifer cleared her throat.
"Three minutes. You must finish getting ready."

"Welcome to the 2015 Miss Texas Pageant. Welcome to the stage the mother of the potential winner, and the beautiful lady herself!"
Applause filled the dome stadium that held around 15,000 people.
The announcer continued, "And folks, it comes down to the stunning Rennin Whitley and the gorgeous Marie Jacobs."
Rennin's mind was on the one thing that had been bothering her for the past week, as she patiently waited for the test results back from the doctor. She listened partly to the announcer until it was her turn to give her final speech, before she was elected Miss Texas. The results had already been given to the 45 competing females at the practice pageant three weeks ago.
Plastering on her biggest smile Rennin's soft southern drawl filled the loudspeakers as she began to speak a stream of words into the black microphone that she had previously been handed. "I won't lie when I say I want to win. But even if I walk of this stage without the crown on my head, I will have already won the biggest prize of all- happiness. You see I've done it all to be able to get here. I've made my very best friends which I have competed against tonight, I've met my loving boyfriend, and I've learned so much from all of my experiences. I've had good connections all my life, and I've never had to work for anything until I was introduced into the pageant world. I've practiced the same walk over and over for the past eighteen years, and it all comes down to one final speech before I find out if I get to represent our wonderful state in front of our nation. But what I'm trying to say is- this is all I've ever wanted, and this is just a dream come true to be able to stand on this stage tonight. That's all I have to say, thank you Texas."
Rennin cut a quick glance towards her glaring mother knowing what she was going to say. It wasn't the speech she had practiced, but Rennin's mind was much to busy contemplating other things.
She smiled once more, and gave a well practiced wave to the audience. Rennin eyes scanned the perimeter as a pair of soft green eyes met hers in the first row. She smiled- not a pageant smile- a real smile, a smile that was only seen in private places- a flawed smile.
The corners of the mysterious mans lips turned upwards as well as he glanced upon Rennin, examining her body in the blush gown for the goddess she was.
Rennin's gaze was lost into the mans eyes for what seemed like hours, not paying attention to anything else but the set of eyes boring right back into her soul.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to announce the winner of the 2015 Mrs. Texas pageant. However, if the leading lady cannot fulfill her duties, the crown will be handed over the first runner up. And the winner is," building suspense he finally added, "Rennin Whitley!"
Confetti poured from the celling as Rennin smiled and waved, hesitantly leaving the mans gaze.
