The cold carton of milk was clutched tightly in his hand as he made his way towards the scene of the crime, his heart hammering against his chest rapidly.
Just how much time did he have left until the police officers would arrive? Coming here the next day in the morning would be far too risky—far too late. He had to act now.
Squinting his eyes to adjust to the pitch darkness of the hallway, he made his way quickly towards Taehyun's house unit, the carton of milk still cold in his hand. To his greatest relief, the coast was clear with, not a police officer was standing guard in front of the house, instead, a brightly coloured yellow tape stood in their place with the label "DO NOT ENTER". Not wanting to lose a second, he went under the strip of tape as he entered the house. It looked exactly as he had left it last night.
Just as he was about to make his way towards the kitchen, he heard a chorus of footsteps thundering behind him. Before even getting the chance to run away, he heard a booming voice coming from behind.
"STOP RIGHT THERE!" Officer Park spoke as two guards from behind him walked towards the intruder, each handling him by the arm. He resisted against their firm grips, pushing and pulling in an attempt to break free; but it was no use.
Officer Park walked towards the mysterious person, unveiling his hood and taking his mask off to reveal none other than Soobin who was under the disguise. A gasp was heard from behind the Officer as Soobin immediately jerked his head up to see Beomgyu, Hueningkai and Yeonjun just a few feet away from him, all of them wearing the same shocked expression.
"What did I tell you? That we would be able to catch the perpetrator tonight," said Officer Park who couldn't suppress a triumphant look.
"What proof do you have that it was me?" Soobin seethed.
"This," The Officer replied, picking up the carton of milk that he had dropped earlier.
"I can explain—"
"Explain?" Mocked Officer Park, "don't worry, there will be ample time for you to explain in the station," he continued.
The trio watched helplessly from behind as the officers handcuffed Soobin before dragging him away towards the parking lot. Collapsing to his knees, Yeonjun went on all-fours as his breathing sped up rapidly.
"Soobin...? No—it can't be, there must've been a mistake...," he spluttered incredulously.
"I'm afraid we won't be able to give a solid answer for sure until the investigation is over," said a voice from behind them; it was Officer Park. "Soobin will be detained as we search his house for any proof or evidence that he was behind Taehyun's death—"
"WHY DO YOU MAKE IT SOUND AS IF YOU'RE SURE HE WAS BEHIND TAEHYUN'S DEATH?" Yeonjun cried, grabbing the latter by the collar.
"Yeonjun, please, calm down," Hueningkai pleaded.
"I'm sorry. I know this is a lot to comprehend in one night, which is why I'm suggesting for all of you to head back home and get a good night's sleep," Officer Park apologised. Yeonjun looked too tired to bother to come up with a retort as he released the Officer.
"When will we be able to know if Soobin is innocent or not?" Asked Beomgyu.
"We'll try to let you know before next Friday," Officer Park replied.
And with that, they bid their goodbyes as the trio headed out of the apartment, hoping that this was all a bad dream they needed to wake up from.
