Author's Pov
The two siblings locked eyes with each other. The world seemed as it was against Xiaolian. Countless thoughts were running through her head. "How did he get in? Why was here? What were his intentions? Did XiaoXiao kill him...? Why this week out of all weeks did this have to happen?" Xiaojun looked at the motionless corpse on the kitchen floor, looking rather lifeless. Immediately he put his two fingers on the boys neck. A light pulse but still present. He slumped to the floor letting a long deep breath slip out of his lips."Is he alive XiaoXiao?" Lian peered at him with her heart in her throat.
"He's not dead, at least not now."
"Where were you last night? Did you even lock the door when you arrived?" She moved her heavy feet to the door examining the lock to see if it had been tampered with or the door frame. Nothing. The door was locked as normal everything checked out except for the body now laying on the floor. Her anxiety screamed at her to check every exit of the house, but then it hit her... The windows were too small for anyone to slip in, they lived on the 7th floor. There was no other exit except for the door. Why isn't anything adding up.
Her brother grabbed a phone ready to dial 1-1-9, suddenly his phone was grabbed by her.
"There's no way the cops are gonna make it out here, the roads are flooded. I feel like we can handle this ourselves." She said. Her brother grabbed the laptop from the living room and tracked through the surveillance cameras set up around the living room and kitchen.
It was a simple logical thought to search the front door camera, scrolling through the footage the door had remain shut. Even after her brother returned home, it was closed and locked. The next step was checking the kitchen footage.
"THERE STOP!" She yelled.
3:57 A.M. 'Kitchen' camera feed
It revealed the tall boy grasping the counter as soon as he came out of the one room she hadn't expected. Hers.
He grabbed a water from the fridge looking completely out of it, sitting on a stool in front of the small island counter. He stayed like that, staring into the abyss until Xiaolian opened the door in the morning.
"What... my room? H-" Sentence weren't formed, the world's rotation halting for a few seconds as if it was hours. Lian didn't want to be stuck in this new nightmare. Xiaojun loooked at her in terror.
"Who did I hit?"
Xiaolian's Pov
Two exhaustingly slow hours passed by, the boy was now laying down on the couch. You looked at your brother that leaned against the wall on the opposite side of the couch with a soccer cleat in his hand. (it was the only heavy object he was allowed to use in the apartment to fling, of course if he needed to) Drool was slowly dropping from the corner of his mouth and his head was bopping side to side.He was tired from the lack of sleep and the sudden quick shot of adrenaline he had received earlier was starting to run his energy thin. It was evident in the way his eyes closed.
You looked at them both then at your hand that held the other cleat to complete the pair. Who would've thought on a Saturday evening you would be sitting on the kitchen counter in front of a 21st century horror story, ready to risk your life if necessary. If someone passing by had told you that that's how you were going to spend the day you would've never believed a word. Speaking of Saturday's it brought up memories that seemed to be long forgotten.
Xiaojun was a talented soccer player up until your living situation changed over night, and you took partial blame for that. You felt as if in some way you stripped him of the one thing that gave him joy and freedom. True resentment for yourself started that night.
It was a chilly night as he came home with his friends Kunhang (A/N: Hendery's real name for those that didn't know) and YangYang came home from practice, late might you say... a little later than what they had promised. You all shared a room so when they opened the door to reveal you in a pool of your own blood, the soccer ball in Xiao's hand fell as well as their smiles. He screamed as you looked up as everything slowly became black, only to remember your brothers hands along your face, teardrops landing on your forehead from the three boys and two pairs of hands picking up your worn out body to the nearest hospital.
Police started an investigation and your mother disappeared into the darkest shadows of Hong Kong. Xiaojun and his friends took all the money they had saved up for his upcoming soccer tour and bought four one-way plane tickets to a different country and a different city the next morning. They kissed college degrees goodbye, but most importantly the sport they used to get away from the frightening problems at home. Saturdays were the only day out of the 7 day week that you all could spend time outside with an excuse that wouldn't get you in trouble at home. You would read on the stairs in front of the soccer field enjoying your time out before going back to the hell that was supposed to be a safe space. That feeling of safety was long gone. You remember telling Xiaojun that you were leaving early back to the house to lock yourself in your room so he can enjoy the rest of the day with his friends without them having to be worried about looking after you. And he reluctantly agreed regretting his decision later that night.
Tears fell from your eyes as the scenes replayed in your head. The boy laying on the couch stirred bringing you back to the present in a split second. He kept muttering words as tears gathered on his face. You got up closer curious as to what was causing this enigma of a person to cry in their sleep. You know the expression "curiously killed the cat" yeah you were about to learn that it's a valuable lesson, and it kills immensely slow.
"Please let me save her... just let me save Xiaolian." You stumbled over the cleat you had dropped waking up Xiaojun.
What... sa-save who...
