Why the emptiness?

We decided to look around. There was bound to be more loot somewhere. The town was deserted, but as there were still everyday items around the area, it had not been evacuated. There was no blood either, meaning no killing. So where was everyone? The atmosphere in the empty town was chilling and cold. The whole team was on edge, I could see it just by looking at them. They weren't talking as if they were at ease, and they weren't deep in concentration either. It was fear. They were full of fear. An elite military group scared? That happened once in a blue moon. Something wasn't right.

As we continued down the road, my thoughts were confirmed. The smell hit you in an instant. The smell of decay and suffering. Every wall had been spray painted with the words "embrace the madness or it will consume you" and a big, creepy smile under it. And then we saw it. A pit containing around twenty dead bodies inside it. And they all had that creepy grin on their faces.
