"Would you rather fight a hundred chicken-sized zombies, or ten zombie-sized chickens?"
I snapped out of my thoughts as I hit the wooden dummy with my sword yet again. My friend Olivia was sitting on the ledge of the window of our treehouse, a jar of redstone dust in her hand as she straightened her black lab goggles.
"Just to be clear, you wouldn't have any weapons, or armor," she continued. "So you'd have to fight them with your hands."
I didn't really hear her. Or understand the question that well. My brain was kind of focused on fighting right then.
"Huh?" I murmured as I continued fighting the practice dummy.
Olivia gave me an exasperated look as she repeated the question that I just asked. "Huh?"
"What?"
She sighed, turning back to the redstone contraption she was working on. "It's just a dumb question. Forget it."
"Mkay," I said softly, going back to fighting.
After a couple minutes of silence between us, Olivia got to her feet and wiped the sheen of sweat from her forehead.
"Soo...I've got a daylight sensor on the roof..." she stated, still staring at her machine as though she was trying to figure out if she'd done anything wrong.
"Mmm-hmm," I commented, only partly listening. Couldn't she see I was busy? Like, sure, I'd listen to her at any point and any day, but right now just wasn't that point or that day. You know?
"And if I did this right, these lamps should turn on once it gets dark," she added as she went on the tips of her toes. For some reason, she did this quite a lot. I had no clue why.
"Mmm-hmm." I really was trying to listen. Honestly. I was. But it was getting harder not to snap at her a little with a witty response.
Also, why the hell is this even such a big deal? (A/N: I'M SO SORRY.) Like, I knew how much she loved her builds, but I never cared as much as she did. This wasn't that cool, anyways. We had torches. We had light. So what was the point of making fancy magic-dust-powered lamps?
"Well, I didn't just want to leave Reuben here with nothing while we're at the building competition." She looked at her invention for a couple seconds longer, then started tinkering again.
"Um, what?" I exclaimed, turning around for once and looking at her. She looked at me as well, and our eyes caught. "He's coming with us."
"Really?" Olivia asked hesitantly. Her wide brown eyes were sprinkled with doubt.
"What kind of question is that? Of course he is!" I shot back, eyes growing bigger in shock.
"Okay, okay!" She threw her hands up in surrender. "I'm not saying he shouldn't come! I'm not," she repeated as I gave her a look. As did Reuben. "But don't you think it's a little weird that you take him with you everywhere you go?"
I crossed my arms as she continued speaking, a small glare on my face as I turned to gaze at my other friend. Reuben jumped up four-legged on a chest by the window, and his little pink ears were flopping happily in the slight breeze as his curly tail wagged back and forth. "He kind of makes us look like...I don't know...amateurs."
"He's my wingman," I retorted sharply. "People always wanna talk to the girl with the pig."
"You mean talk about the girl with the pig," Olivia corrects. Her nervous expression was growing, and I could see her biting her lip. "Like, 'Look at the weird girl with the weird pig. How weird.'" She went back to working on the lamps.
