CHAPTER THREE :
Prodigal Grandmother
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••After Mia's dramatic school day, we went straight to the Falcon Sports Center where Mia and Brendon work. Usually I'd be at Empire Records store working the cash register, but thankfully today was my day off.
"Alessa, this is an athletic establishment, not a library." My sister's boss snarked from the counter.
"Heh, good one." I responded flatly, not looming up from my algebra homework . "At least I'm going to graduate."
"Also no one says 'athletic establishment' in casual conversation." Brendon laughed, joining Mia and I at the counter.
"Smartasses, the both of you."
"You love it, Jeffery, admit it!" The González boy stated confidently with a shit-eating grin.
"I'm not admitting to anything." He scoffed. "Get back to work, Brendon."
"Later, Nerd."
"Later, Dork."
Just as my friend returned to doing his job, Helen Thermopolis walked into the building in all her colorful glory.
"Hi, Mom." Mia greeted simply, while I waved at our mother.
"You threw up, huh?" She asked my sister without so much as a proper greeting. "And you ran away."
Mia rolled her eyes at the reminder of her unfortunate debate presentation. "I'm trying to forget about it."
"Can I have some shoes and chalk, please?" My twin asked her boss, trying to escape from the conversation.
"Anyway, I'll go talk to your debate teacher. What's his name?" Mom suggested.
"Mr. O'Connel." Mia and Mom chorused, before our mother continued. "And straighten it all out. Mm-hmm?"
"Mom, I am never going to be a good public speaker. Just call him and tell him I wanna be a mime." My older twin suggested, making me chuckle.
"I can do that." Mom agreed, making me laugh.
"Hold on, you told me I couldn't skip out on choir. Why can't I be a mime too?" I jokingly argued.
