BANG. He sat up quickly and looked around the room. He started sweating very slowly and he stood up. He presumed that it was just the storm, maybe it was. Or it could be something else. Could his mind be tricking him?
He looked out the window with his squinting eyes and scanned the area. He moved to the back of his house and looked around, nothing. He won't dare to go downstairs in the night because of the stories he's heard about the house. He went back to his bed and fell back into his sunken mattress. He was very alert and it was barely impossible to fall back asleep. So, he decided to go and make a cup of tea. Even though he could be at high risk. He watched as the kettle rumbled just like the thunder outside his window. He sat for a few minutes and watched the tea bag infuse the water. He poured in his milk and watched the spirals as he stirred the milk in and it slowly looked lighter. He put in a teaspoon of sugar and watched as it slowly melted away into the water. He quickly made his way up the stairs again without trying to spill any.
The storm was getting angry, the mist was closing in and his window began to get smothered. His hands were turning cold and his fear was turning deep into his blood; the fear was infusing his eyes as if it was the devil himself, inside controlling him and his thoughts. It was stupid that he is scared to do things in his own house and that he believes what everyone says about the house, he doesn't really think those things are true.
He heard noises coming from outside like people were screaming. He thought that it was just in his head and he hoped that it wouldn't continue. But it did. He got up from the soft, sunken mattress and slowly moved over to the window, he muttered to himself about that it couldn't be anything. He saw some small figures near the river. After having a quiet debate to himself he decided to go out there to make sure everything was okay, despite it being in the middle of one of the biggest and most violent storms he has ever seen. His legs were shaken as he walked down the warn, wooden staircase. He unlocks the front door and the wind was going to drag him out the door, he moves out and the door slams loudly behind him.
The small figures were still there. He knew this was real and the devil inside his head wasn't playing any games with him this time. He ran over to them, it was children. Children outside in the storm at 2AM. They looked startled. They were all siblings of each other. He asked them why they were out here and non of them responded. He just presumed that they wanted to experience the storm as they may never see something as spectacular as this again. He told them to go inside as some of them acknowledged him and did that. One of them didn't do that though.
They were very close to the river and he went over there to take her home. As he walked over to her she turned her head to see who it was, and slipped and fell down the soggy, muddy sides of the river; she was one of the unlucky ones it was in the deepest part of the river, unlike where some other people have fallen in. She fell into the river and she was holding on for dear life. She was screaming out for help. It was dark and raining heavily and he thought that he would be at risk to go down there. It would be too late if he would to go and call for help so he went down there and he slid down into the river. The girl let go and she was taken down the river into the misty unknown.
He panicked and didn't know what to do. The current was getting stronger and there was no-one there to help him. He tried to push himself up on the rocks but he couldn't. Several minutes had passed and his fingers felt dead and numb. After crying out for help for several minutes, still no-one appeared. He couldn't hold on any longer and the current took him away and his scream gently faded away and he was devoured by the mist. The thunder started to fade away and there was just the gentle rumble in the distance. It was a very leery night in the neighbourhood. Now, no-one dares to go near the river and the house is now empty. Only the spirits are left and still alive in the haunted house of the town.
