It was a cloudy Friday and the boys were going to be performing the Commonwealth stadium in Edmonton. Harry was starting to feel the usual adrenaline rush as they prepared in the spare dressing room, waiting in line behind Louis for Lou Teasdale to fix up his hair.
"Louis honey, stop moving or you'll get this in your eyes," Lou scolded as she waved the hair spray over his messed locks..
Louis stuck his tongue out and continued bouncing on the balls of his feet. "I've gotta get nimble, remember?"
Teasdale gave up and shoved him aside. "Next," she muttered, though Harry could see a smile peeking through her lips. What Louis charms does to people, he supposed. Not that he didn't know from experience.
"Stand still," she instructed.
"Whatever you say," said Harry, winking playfully as she attacked his curls with hairspray.
Just then Niall poked his head into the room. "Lou, Zayn thinks there's something up with his skin cream or something. I didn't understand half the words he said but something about the hydration balance-?"
"There's nothing wrong with it." said Lou. "I know because I secretly borrowed some the other day- neither of you tell him!" she cried as Harry snickered. "Just tell him to go-"
Suddenly she was cut off as Harry gasped and flinched backward. Being distracted, she had stopped paying attention to how she was directing the hair spray bottle and Harry had gotten a facefull of it.
Harry buckled forward with his hands on his knees, coughing hard.
"Oh my God! Harry!" Lou shot to her feet and scanned around the room frantically, then turned to Niall who's face had gone pale. "Where the hell is his inhaler?!"
Niall dashed off to Harry's suitcase while Harry continued to fight for air, wheezing as his airway seemed to shrink. He stumbled forward and gripped the edge of the table where Lou had been sitting, his eyes tightly shut.
What seemed like centuries later, Naill reappeared and shortly after Harry's inhaler was in his mouth. He took a few long, deep breaths, and slowly felt his thundering heart calm down as his throat cleared.
"Harry I am so so so sorry, I wasn't paying attention-" Teasdale blubbered. "I nearly killed you- I can't believe-"
"S'okay Lou, it happens," Harry croaked, forcing a small smile.
"Can he still sing?" Niall's worried voice broke the silence.
"Too late to find out," said Harry as they heard Paul yelling at them to get backstage. He and Niall left the dressing room, Harry running and hand through his hair and continuing to take deep breaths, coughing cautiously to make sure there was no more aerosol hair product in his lungs.
As they did their usual pre-performance ritual and prepared to go onstage, Louis approach his boyfriend with a worried crease to his eyebrow. "Everything alright Haz? What took you so long?"
"Nothing, just a little makeup incident," Harry assured him, flashing a smile as the door opened and the four of them flipped on their mics and ran out to greet tonight's stadium of screaming fans.
The show started out just fine. Harry chatted and hyped up the crowd, they performed some songs, then Liam read some signs. But as the night drew on, Harry's breathing just wouldn't return to normal. His chest felt tight, and he sat to sit out his next solo and try to drink some water and calm his racing heart. Luckily Liam covered for him and the fans didn't seem to notice or mind much. But Louis did.
He strode over to Harry while Niall sang his part, his expression tense as he sat down beside him. "Mate, what's up with you? You've been acting off this whole time. Something up with your breathing?"
Harry sighed and shook his head. "It's nothing, I just-" He winced as a sharp pain flared in his chest.
"Harry, you didn't tell me-" Louis started, but was cut off as Harry coughed. He leaned forward, wheezing as another attack came on and he felt his airway start to close up, coughing and trying to force air into his lungs.
Louis nervously jumped to his feet, scanning the stage's perimeter for someone who might be in charge of Harry's medical supplies. He eventually spotted Paul Higgins waving something small and blue near the opposing side of the stage.
Just then Louis realized it was time for his solo, so he sang into his mic and tried to walk nonchalantly across the stage, smiling at the swarming crowd as he approached Paul. He reached the end of his solo and knelt down to take Harry's inhaler from their manager, then hurried back along the back of the stage to where Harry had fallen to his knees and was visibly convulsing as each fit of coughing hit him.
"Harry! Here, take this," He fell to his knees and thrust Harry his inhaler, but he was wheezing too hard to take it. Louis frantically held the device to Harry's mouth, not really sure what he was doing. The song ended. Harry heaved in the medication, his whole frame shaking.
By now the crowd had gone too quiet and Louis knew what kind of a scene this must be, but he couldn't leave his boyfriend's side.
"Just keep breathing Harry," Louis said into Harry's rubbing his back as he wheezed into his puffer. "It's alright, I've got you..."
"Uh, sorry everybody, looks like Harry's not feeling well so we're going to give you a short intermission until that's sorted out. So sorry, thank you for you patience, we love you!" Liam was telling the crowd.
Harry's breaths were steadily growing slower and deeper. Niall ran over, looking a bit scared. "Oh no. Musta been from that hairspray stuff." He said as him and Louis lifted Harry over their shoulders and carried him haphazardly off-stage.
"What are you talking about?" Louis demanded as they sat Harry down on a chair in the hallway and knelt beside him.
"I... I'm sorry Louis, I should've... told you" Harry managed between gasping breaths. He held his inhaler in his lap and let his head tilt back against the wall, closing his eyes with exhaustion. "I didn't... want you to worry..."
Louis ran a hand through Harry's curls, too worried about him to be angry. "Haz, it's my job to worry about you. But how can I do my job if you don't tell me about things?"
Harry opened his eyes and stared into Louis', biting his bottom lip as his tears threatened to escape. "I'm sorry, Lou," He repeated hoarsely.
Louis just shook his head and leaned forward, planting a kiss on his boyfriend's cheek. "I forgive you, mate. Just never again, yeah? I don't want to have to run back and forth along too many stages to get you an inhaler."
A small smile spread on Harry's lips as he brushed away a stray tear with his thumb. "Never again." he promised.
