*Graphic Description*How do we start?.......
Ok, so I was 12yr old, at this time I had stopped going to the other hospital because they were not accepting my insurance anymore.
Since I wasn't getting any of my medication (Rhemicade) my condition started get worse.
It starts that I can't bare weight because my ankles are inflamed, then my knees. Came to the point I was crawling off my bed to go to the bathroom and crawling back.
When I say I was bad...it's not an exaggeration. My joints were stiff to point that if I wanted to turn my mom had to roll me. I would sleep with pillows holding my arms up. I couldn't move without crying.
Let's not get started on my skin, the rashes (Plaque Psoriasis) covered my entire body. Only my face, hands, feet are clear.
My best way to explain what it feels like is it's like you're wearing a helmet all the time (Yes, it's in my hair) and having a skin tight spandex suit on all the time, and someone is always pulling the spandex making you itch and burn.
At this time, a new children's hospital was opening up. So, my mom and my dad picked me up and put me on a dolly.
We got to the hospital and not based on the fact I was in horrible condition but turns out my platelets were low. I was admitted.
To control the pain I was on a lot of pain medication until they couldn't give me anymore. So they came up with the idea of giving me a walking epidural
I stayed there for almost 4months. We are only gonna talk about what happened a month before i was discharged.
The epidural wasn't needed at this point but I was still on pain medication. Starting to get the strength in my legs again but something was wrong with my right knee.
The swelling was going down in my other joints but my right knee was getting bigger.
They said they would take a look and tell me what they found.
I was coming back from PT in my wheelchair. My doctor and my mom were talking and waiting for me. My mom looked concerned so I was worried.
My doctor told me what was wrong with my knee. I had a massive pus pocket behind my knee cap.
He told me I would need surgery and looking back now it was a small surgery, but to 12yr old me it was the most terrifying thing I heard.
I asked if I really needed the surgery. He looked at me with the straightest face to show that he was serious and said "if you don't do this surgery, you will lose your right leg at 18"
Needless to say we agreed to the surgery.
But my doctor had a idea, he could do something else so I didn't have to do the surgery.
He comes into my room at 2am and says he's gonna aspirate my knee.
Since I was good with needles now I was like ok, that was until I saw the needle....
It was huge but I wasn't that scared because I was expecting to get my knee numbed but when I asked he said I didn't need it. My mom was not happy but she asked me if I wanted to try. I was scared but I said yes
He didn't even get the needle half way in until I screamed LOUD again its about 2am in a children's hospital. So a teenager screaming is gonna cause a commotion.
My doctor thought I was overreacting and at that point my mom was PISSED she stopped everything and said we would do the surgery. My doctor gave me a look and sighed then left.
Did the surgery a couple days later.
When I woke up, I didn't feel any pain that I thought I would. I had gauze wrapped around my leg. They said my knee had to drain and they would change it the next day.
They came in the next day and yes Im weird I was excited. The nurses told me not to look but I said I was ok, and just watched as they unwrapped my knee.
They started taking the gauze off. I was watching, it was just white gauze didn't look like anything. That's when I noticed a light yellow color started showing up. They kept telling me to not look, I just nodded so they could continue.
The yellow started getting darker and gummy until it started to get mixed with blood. The formerly white then yellow gauze was now with blood until the gauze was off...
What I saw made my face expressionless....
I had nurses all around me but I didn't hear one of them....
I gripped the railing on my hospital bed to what I was seeing...My right knee had a cut on the left side 9ins (22cm) going up and down.
My brain was try to comprehend what it was seeing and the first thing that came to mind was a Trash bag
I was looking inside my knee and saw all the blood and my muscle moving. If I twitched my leg the blood moved like liquids in a trash bag. It slushed around while waves of flesh moved as I flexed my muscles.
I didn't snap out of it until one nurse touched my shoulder. She asked if I was ok. I didn't say anything just nodded.
That image is burned into my brain forever.....
