ACHILLES HEEL. | II.
( 'HAD THAT HANDLED' )
If Caroline was anything, she was clever.
It hadn't taken her long to devise a plan that would get her into camp without any doubts. Plus, it could take care of Percy Jackson, too, though was all up to chance.
She had told it to Luke, who had approved.
And so she ran through a snowy road, a little ways away from Camp Half-Blood. Her clothes were deliberately torn, and dried blood and dirt caked her body. Her hair was knotted and filthy.
Behind her, slithered three dracaenae, playing their roles perfectly.
Caroline screamed as she approached the Camp's magical border. She managed to grab the attention of one of the campers, who came running up the hill.
He was taller than her, with messy jet black hair falling in his eyes. He wore a bright orange sweatshirt with the words CAMP HALF-BLOOD printed on the front, and a jacket on top, with black jeans underneath. He held a sword in his hand, and looked alert as his eyes fell on Caroline.
She stumbled forward into the boy's arms, and began crying. "Help. They're after me."
The boy looked alarmed and glanced quickly around the area. Then he saw the dracaena. His eyes widened.
"Go into the camp," the boy shouted.
He ran forwards and Caroline fell to the snow. She couldn't run very far or fast, due to the self-inflicted wounds she'd caused. She figured injuries would have a good effect on her story. Luke had tried to convince her into letting someone else do it, but she'd insisted that she was strong enough to do it on her own.
She dragged herself through the snow towards the border, ignoring the pain erupting across her fingers from the cold. Blood stained the snow as she tried to get back up, though she made it look like she was more hurt than she actually was.
The boy ran forwards and swung at the first reptilian woman, but she blocked it with her large staff. She used the staff to jut the boy under the chin and threw him backwards, but he managed to recover quickly.
The boy parried a strike of the dracaena's staff and disarmed her. Caroline feigned fear as she watched the ordeal go down from a few feet away.
Another person ran up the hill. It was a girl, a little older than Caroline was. She had cropped black hair and wore punk clothing, with black eyeliner accentuating her electric blue eyes. She wore a lot of chains and silver jewelry, and she carried a spear and a shield with what Caroline assumed to be Medusa's face imprinted on it.
Caroline had to admit she looked cool.
The older girl ran towards the boy, who was quickly outnumbered by the dracaenae. She charged at one of the dracaenae in the back. The snake-lady burst into golden dust and faded away.
"I had that handled," the boy grumbled.
"Yeah, I could tell by the fact that you were losing," the girl replied.
Caroline picked up on hints of animosity between those two. She made a mental note of that in case she needed to start something later on.
They were back to back now, with the boy swinging at one of the Dracaena and the girl lunging at the other.
A cyclops stomped towards the three, causing panic. He was around 12 feet tall, and looked strong enough to kill them all with one pinch.
Caroline rolled her eyes. He was late, though she supposed the dramatic entry made things slightly more realistic.
"Oh shit," said the boy. Both campers began backing up as the three monsters made their advance.
Suddenly, a barrage of arrows came flying overhead. They struck the dracaenae and made them fade right away, but the cyclops took some time.
The boy slashed at his knees and he fell. The older girl lodged her spear through its neck.
Gruesome, but effective.
Caroline turned and saw a group of girls, all more or less around her age, moving in. They wore white and silver parkas and were armed with bows and arrows. Caroline immediately recognized them as the Hunters of Artemis.
The boy and girl from before joined them, along with the leader of the Hunters.
The boy kneeled in front of her, a concerned look on his face. "Are you okay?"
"Who are you?" Caroline forced tears to well up in her eyes and a fearfully confused look on her face. Satisfaction washed over her as she saw they all bought it.
The boy looked around at the group before responding. "Percy Jackson. You're safe now."
