After closing the door, she turned toward me and looked at me with the look I hate most, pity. She seemed to notice this and sighed.

“Sorry I know, but it IS my job to worry about you kids”, she said.

I sat down on the examination table while she went to her desk to grab some tools. After checking my heart and blood pressure, she wrote down some things on her clipboard and file some things away before taking a seat in front of me. She crossed her legs and folded her arms just…waiting. I knew there was no way around this so it was my turn to sigh.

“Do you want me to ask or would you like to take the lead?”, she asked calmly.

“It’s nothing.. I just tripped and fell”, I lied again.

“Ribs don’t get injured from tripping. Black eyes can happen but highly unlikely, and most people don’t need help walking off from just falling over”, she said with scary analytical calmness. Did I mention she also has a master’s in psychology?

“Fine you caught me. Eric and Kenny…they-“, I couldn’t even finish without shaking. I didn’t want to remember. It was over and I wanted to forget it.

“They hurt you”, she finished for me. It wasn’t a question, but confirmation of what she already knew. “And those two boys?”, she said hiding the anger behind her voice.

“They…saved me”, I said trying to hide my grin. “They’re transfers in my English class. I was getting beat real bad until they showed up. They literally threw Kenny away and Eric was knocked out”. I wish I could feel bad for them, but as the words came out I was happy that they were on the receiving end this time.

“I do not condone violence Mr. Brian”, Ms. Canon said smiling. “If someone were to report this, your friends would be in serious trouble. Too bad no one knows what happened”, she winked.

She finished my examination after that and gave me some medicine and pain killers. I was excused from the rest of my classes for the day to get better. The twins were still waiting when we came back to the waiting room.

“How is he?”, Derek asked Ms. Canon.

“HE is right here, and he’s fine”, I said irritable. He ignored me looking back to her for answers.

She smiled at the exchange and laughed a bit. “Zephyr will be fine. He’s to take one pill a day for the next week and come back for a check-up next weekend. Other than that, his body will heal itself”, she assured the boy who visibly relaxed. I went to grab my backpack which Michael gladly gave to me along with checking me over again and asking if I was still in pain and okay to walk. Annoyed but thankful I responded yes. We started heading for the front doors when Ms. Canon stopped us.

“Oh and Zephyr, please don’t be afraid to ask for help. That’s what I’m here for okay?”. I nodded and thanked her for all her help.

The twins walked me back to my dorm and I tried to ignore the envious looks I was getting from the girls and the ones of hatred from the guys. Not wanting to take any chances, they walked me all the up to my room. Needless to say they made themselves at home sitting on my bed. Both my roommates were probably still in class as should they.

“Hey, why are you two in class?”, I asked. “I’m thankful and all, but-”

“You being safe is more important that a class or two”, Michael said. Derek nodded in agreement.

“But why help me?”, I pressed. “Seriously what help me? There’s nothing in it for you guys and it’s not like you had to. I’m just some guy”. Derek literally growled at me. What the hell is with these two?

“Don’t ever say that. You’re much more than ‘just some guy’. You’re-“, he cut himself off looking away. Michael looks to his brother and some sort of unspoken agreement passed between them.

“We actually have to go. Our father will expect us home soon”, he said.

“You guys don’t live on campus?”, I asked them. They shook their heads.

“Our father prefers family to be close until we go off on our own”, Michael said. I envied him. I can’t even remember a time when my parents wanted to see me. They usually just send money and occasional treats. Impersonal interactions. I see them every so often for holidays but other that I spend my time here.

“Oh”, I responded sadder than I had wanted. He smiled and grabbed my phone sitting on the desk.

“Hey what are you-”.

“I’m putting our numbers in. If you ever want to hang just text or call”. With that they gathered their things and made their way to the door. “Besides, we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other”, and with that they left, leaving me with a thousand unanswered questions. But mostly just happiness of knowing I had two people looking out for me. Maybe it was just wishful thinking but…were they flirting with me?
