Prologue:

Charles had come riding into the yard of the orphanage. His sister's child had been taken from her at birth and sent to a place they made sure would keep her. He didn't need to be pointed toward the girl, all he needed to do was look for the little girl who looked exactly like her mother. Who also seemed to know who he was and was glad to see him. She remembered when she was tiny and the picture of her mother's elder brother she had seen before she'd been stoled from Marie's arms.

He had taken the child home with him, while his sister was on her way to the castle to be cared for by the King's physicians. Kate had never seen her aunt before, but went to his wife readily when he handed her off. She was bathed and clothed, then she was brought down to eat dinner with them. Charles' own children adored their cousin; his legitimate and bastards alike. Charles had been surprised when his wife took his other children in, but she told him that they were not to blame for the mistakes of their parents.

Anne, Mary, Henry, Frances, Eleanor, Harry (Henry the younger), Charlie, Franny and Mare were all the sweetest of children. Henry III...Hank as little Katerina coined...and Chuck.

“Does mummy still remember me?”

The question was quiet and had broke then silence. Charles lifted his head, seeing his niece looking at him for an explanation. Anne, Charles' eldest, clasped her hand over Kate's and smiled softly.

“Father left me with her,” She spoke, “when he first found her. She kept asking for her baby. Asking where her Kate was,” Anne kissed her cousin's hair, “but your mummy is very ill, darling. They have kept her locked away in the dark for so long and Father and the King want to make sure that she is well. I am sure that Father will bring you to see her soon enough.”

Anne ruffled her cousin's hair gently and the little girl gave her a perfect version of Charles' own glare. Which had amused Charles himself.
