THE NEXT DAY at school, Johnny and his friends tried to avoid Miguel at all costs. Whenever the saw him in the hallway or standing outside the school, they'd turn the other way. Daniel tried to stick around Miguel as much as possible because he knew that as long as he had him by his side, Johnny and his friends wouldn't dare mess with him. Ali also tended to be around Miguel constantly so Daniel looked at it as the perfect opportunity to talk to her more. He didn't even seem to care that it bothered Johnny because he knew that he wouldn't dare do anything with Miguel around. It was like Miguel had suddenly become his bodyguard.

Daniel had been sitting in class when he saw Ali and her group of friends walk by. Miguel walked next to her, looking completely uninterested in what the girls were talking about. Daniel quickly grabbed his backpack and started running up to Ali, Miguel, and one of Ali's friends—Miguel couldn't seem to remember her name no matter how hard he tried. Ali had been talking their ears off, but Miguel had zoned her out about halfway through. When Daniel tapped her shoulder, Ali turned her head around.

"Hey," Daniel said to her.

"Hi," Ali responded.

"How you doing?" Daniel asked.

"Ooh, what happened to your forehead?" Ali asked.

Miguel remembered the night before when he had returned to Ali's house and she had asked him all sorts of questions about why he was so beaten up. Miguel assured her that it was nothing to worry about, but Ali had insisted on knowing. Miguel explained to her that he had gotten into a fight with Johnny. Ali had been furious, but Miguel begged her not to say anything to him about it. The last thing he wanted was to give Johnny any more reason to feel like he was a threat.

"Oh, it was terrible," Daniel responded. "It was this gigantic, runaway zit."

Miguel made a disgusted face at him as Ali chuckled.

"That's gross," Ali's friend responded.

"Daniel, this is Susan," Ali responded and Miguel tried to etch that into his brain.

"Hi," Daniel said to her.

Susan didn't even look at Daniel. "Charmed."

"Now come on, what really happened?" Ali asked Daniel.

He turned to look at her. "I got in a bike accident, but I'm okay."

Miguel sighed, knowing that wasn't the truth. He knew that it was Johnny and his friends, but he didn't say anything. Daniel just didn't want to worry Ali or give her any more reason to be mad at Johnny and Miguel understood that.

"What kind of bike do you have, Daniel?" Susan asked. "Honda? Suzuki? What?"

Daniel furrowed his eyebrows together. "Uh no, it's a, like a miyaji turbo actually."

"Oh really?" Susan asked.

Ali smiled at Daniel. "Well, we're going to the arcade. Do you want to come?"

"Yeah, sure," Daniel said. "Sounds great to me."

"You gotta check out this new game I want to show you," Ali said with a smile.

Daniel stopped walking all of a sudden and Miguel noticed a panicked look in his eyes. Miguel looked ahead to see Johnny and his friends sitting near their bikes. They had managed to avoid them all day and the thought of having to walk right by them made Daniel nervous. Miguel was about to tell Daniel that he didn't have any reason to worry and tried to remind him that they wouldn't bother either of them, but he didn't have the chance to.

"I just remember I got to...I got to—I forgot something," Daniel said, stuttering over his words. "So, I'll catch up with you guys in a minute, okay?"
